Default Machine quilters associations or groups in California Bay Area

My wife, Kim decided to get more into quilting. I just put up a
new web site for her (KimQuilt - http://www.kimquilt.com).

I was hoping some of you could tell me which associations or groups
in the Bay Area that would be good for her to mingle with ? We
live in San Jose, right next to Cupertino, Saratoga and Los Gatos. She
has lots of friends she quilts with but I think she would also
enjoy getting to know more people. She is also computer phobic,
she's never posted to a newgroup - she'd rather quilt :-). I'm
working on that.

BTW - the website needs more pictures - it's a work in progress.
Kim is working on some Girl Scout charity quilts as I type so I
am going to put up a page on that soon. But they are simple quilts
so they're not really a showcase, cool nonetheless.

She's also doing an elective class on 1930's quilting at a local
school. I was thinking a few pictures on that would be interesting
too. ... coming soon.

I'd also appreciate any critique on the web site. My strength in
literature is not what I'd call impressive.

Thanks
Gianni

Well...there is a guild that meets in San Jose, the Santa Clara Valley
Quilt Association, it's a pretty large guild. In addition to the
regular monthly meetings there are various quilting bees she could join.
I know they have a nice web page if you google it.

In Mountain View there is the Quilt and Fiber Arts group. They are
currently having a wonderful show at City Hall in Mountain View in the
4th floor gallery. I believe today is the last day...better call before
going over there.

She could ask around at the many, many quilt shops in the area. I know
Whiffle Tree in Cupertino has work days on certain Tuesdays of the
month. Anyone can show up and work on a project in the classroom.
That's a fun chance to meet other quilters in the area and who knows
what could come of that. Other shops may have groups that meet as well.
Worth asking.

If she feels like driving, we have a nice guild here in San Mateo. My
mom comes up from Los Gatos and we have ladies from Mountain View and
Los Altos who find it worth the drive as well. We meet on the third
Wednesday of the month and in November Jane Sassaman is speaking. Not
bad for a $5 guest fee.

Lots of quilters in the area in spite of what Ragmop might say. She
just wasn't too good at hunting when she lived here ;-)

She spends alot of time with people at Wiffle Tree and has some very
nice friends there. You're right though, there are some other venues
she could look at.

Tell Kim rctq is the best group around, and we're around ALL the time :-) I
don't live anywhere near you, so can't help much.

The site looks pretty good (BTW on the front page it should be "complement"
with an "e" instead of compliment). Looking forward to pictures of quilts!

Is she machine quilting on a longarm, shortarm, or domestic machine? That
would make a difference as to what type of group she might want to join.

If a domestic machine, have her stop by her LQS (Local Quilt Shop) and ask
for a machine quilting friendly guild. There should be a ton of them in your
area.

If she's quilting on a longarm or shortarm, there are several groups for
Northern California that meet a couple of times a year. Let me know if she
wants to get in contact with them.

I do. I visited when I lived down there but was working full time and
too bushed to attend regularly. Nice group. Fun activities. Show her
their web page

http://www.scvqa.org/newscvqa/index.htm

Meetings are the 4th Thursday of the month (3rd in Nov and Dec because
of holidays) and they have day and night meetings. Looks like November
is a day meeting and the speaker is Julie Silber who is quite the quilt
collector if I recall correctly.

Wonderful shop and Louise is a very nice and helpful owner. Granary is
really close to there - De Anza over 280 turn L on Homestead then R on
Mary and it's in the shopping center on the right on the corner of
Fremont and Mary. Mebbe less than 10 minutes if you hit all red lights.

If it sways her any.....Jane is speaking to us on Wednesday. On the
weekend she will be teaching at Whiffle Tree. So, if your wife is
interested she could get in a lecture and a class from a very well known
and wonderful quilter. Her web page is www.janesassaman.com

Ragmop ?

A poster who now lives in Texas. She used to live up here but was so
directionally challenged she never managed to find other quilters or
quilt shops ;-)

I just checked - their home page shows that the next meeting is on the
27th ? Yet their calendar shows the 20th ... I get calendar challenged
too sometimes. Seems like they're getting a new member.

Yep - I took a peek at Jane's web page - very impressive stuff. Boy I
have my web page work cut out for me.

Directional challenge = lost ? Very funny. Kim and I are from
Australia so we often get north and south mixed up but that happening
less and less as time goes by.

Southern Alameda County, Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Tuesday of
every month at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark. Out vice president
comes in evey month from Palo Alto. We have several professional quilters and
award winning machine quilters who come to the meetings and talk shop. Our web
site is www.piecemakersguild.org.
Have your wife talk to the ladies at Eddies Quilting Bee at 254 Castro St.,
Mountain View (650-969-1714) for information closer to your home. Their web
site is www.quiltingbee.com
Good luck!

She convinced me to buy a longarm machine. She does some very impressive
stuff with it.
