a way to patch a pair of jeans that have split along the back pocket.
They're "stretch denim" and so far two different brands of iron on patch
have peeled off.

I really want to keep them for grunge work outside but don't want the
world to know I have red undies on!

I find that the thinner "mending tape" tends to hold better than the
iron on patches. I've also then sewed around the borders for good
measure.

The simplest fix would be to zig-zag a strip of cotton tape (or strong
fabric) on top of the split. You might lose a smidgin of the pocket, but
it's a strong mend and should keep the jeans going a while longer. If
the strip is awkward to keep in place, then baste or tack it down with a
scrap of wonder-under or similar.

If the split is awkward enough, then take the pocket off, put a
bloody-great patch on the inside and then replace the pocket on top of
the mend. This will add strength as well as covering the patched area
nicely.

I was going to suggest just moving the pocket to BE the patch.

I usually don't use a patch at all on this. Instead, I pick a thread
that matches and use the machine stitch that waves back and forth with
lots of little stitches. I set it all the way wide and a very short
stitch length, then use it to machine darn, going back and forth and up
and down. I even managed to save my teen daughter's friends favorite
jeans when she caught a back pocket falling out of a tree and ripped out
most of one side of the bottom.
