Making a Neck Ring/ Choker
I want to make a neck ring/choker
I have made no jewellery before and this is a one off. Where do I buy an 18" length of thin silver bar/wire from in the UK? How do I get a good circle? Is the best join the ends bent into small hooks? Is bought silver shiny? Thanks |

Hi there,
You can get the silver wire in any length from Cookson Precious Metal or Kernowcraft if it is a small order - it does come shiny but after you have shaped it etc it may loose its shininess. Then if it was a one off piece and you don't have any tools, then you could shape it by hand around an old paint tin or something of similar diameter and shape - a leather mallet would be a good tool as it helps you to shape the metal a little easer around your form. Then the ends you can either heat with a small gas torch to melt the ends so the silver balls up (if the silver wire is thick enough) which is a nice finish or like you said you can bend the wire into a loop one end and a hook the other and ensure the choker goes all the way around the neck. (just make sure the ends are filed so they don't scratch the wearer!) Alternatively you can buy ready formed silver choker wires where you can thread on pendants etc. Just my little pennies worth!! Then if it was a one off piece and you don't have any tools, then you could shape it by hand around an old paint tin or something of similar diameter and shape - a leather mallet would be a good tool as it helps you to shape the metal a little easer around your form. It will be a one off as I can't find any I like at the size I want. Then the ends you can either heat with a small gas torch to melt the ends so the silver balls up (if the silver wire is thick enough) which is a nice finish or like you said you can bend the wire into a loop one end and a hook the other and ensure the choker goes all the way around the neck. I have got quite a few modellers tools - I will do a hook method (just make sure the ends are filed so they don't scratch the wearer!) Yes Alternatively you can buy ready formed silver choker wires where you can thread on pendants etc. Can't find any I like |

Just had a look on Kernowcraft
3mm is 34p/cm 45cm = £15.30 - pretty good value 4mm would be £27 Also I don't know how flexible 3mm and 4mm are, but the neck ring wouldn't be put on and taken off all the time. If I could silver solder it would be so easy to make bangles and similar from thick wire. Thanks |
