Default Advice needed Wedding Star Quilt

I'm making The Wedding Star Quilt by Judy Nemeyer, its a paper pieced
quilt. If you want to see it, its at Quiltworx.com. This is a special
quilt (aren't they all?), I'm making it for my nephews wedding present
in October. I never follow the directions, none of my quilts are a
size that is standard, I never pre-wash my fabric etc., etc., BUT for
this quilt, I'm following the directions because I just spent a bundle
on material and I don't want to mess it up, and it is a special gift.
So, a couple of questions:
I pre-washed the material and now need to iron it. Should I use
starch? Will it make the paper piecing easier?
I just cut out 322 arcs, some of them are wrinkled, should I take the
time to iron the paper? I have done a few that were really wrinkled,
but I'm trying to decide if I'm just being obsessive or not. I'm
making the king size pattern so there are still 322 half melon pieces
to cut out, 288 quarter centers to cut out so if I iron the arcs I'll
need to iron a whole lot more :-). Thanks for any advice, and anyone
who has done this quilt, please chime in with any tips you may have, I
will be very grateful!
THANKS in advance!

only if it's a 'hard' crease or a crinkled up a mess. Soft folds are going
to keep occuring as you work on it, no need to worry about them, it's a
given. Even hoop rings come out after quilting, so if they come out, small
wrinkles/folds will too. You only have to worry about hard ones or crinkles
that actually interfere with placement. Be sure not to iron, just 'press'
on those melon shapes, or they will stretch.
I've never used starch, can't think of how it would help.

I would probably use spray sizing on the fabric before I cut the
shapes. The problem with using the sizing or starch after you have
cut the shapes is that you may distort them when you press them to dry
the sizing.

I alsways use spray sizing on pre-washed fabrics. I actually don't
pre-wash my fabrics because I find new fabric a lot easier to work
with than pre-washed fabrics.

Mardi,
I haven't cut the material yet, just the paper, I think I will use the
starch just to keep the pieces from distorting while I work with them.
Thanks!

I think when working on a quilt with oddly shaped pieces and "antic bias"
starch or spray sizing is VERY important....you can make your own using corn
starch and boiling water as if making gravy, cool, and put in a sprayer.

There really is a difference between Starch and Spray Sizing. I would
recommend the Sizing. Starch might be a little too stiff.
