Default Crazy for Cross Stitch substitution Magazine

I received the first Home Cooking mag today. The excuse they gave for
discontinuing crazy for cross stitch is this 'Try as we might, we have been
unable to find enough cross-stitch-loving subscribers like yourself to keep
on publishing a magazine as unique as crazy for cross stitch.' Who do they
think they are kidding?

And there are how many other cross stitch mags out there? LOL

CCS consistently had the fewest projects per issue, and certainly the
fewest that appealed to me. I'm still not sure why I commited to the
subscription in the first place beyond maybe the lavender sampler in
the very first issue I received and the hopes that they'd all have
something that good. I've been sorely disappointed in this magazine
and am not in the least upset that it's gone. I am glad, however,
that I didn't unsub before the announcement that they were
discontinuing, otherwise I never would have seen the Autumn's Sunset
sampler in the last two issues I received... which I just started this
weekend!

And, of course, they would NEVER contemplate that the reason they can't get
enough subscribers is that they're not as good as the other magazines who have
plenty of subscribers.

I've paid $60 a year for a XS magazine from England because I consistently
bought most of the previous year's issues at their booth at the festival. So,
if I'm not willing to pay $20 a year for CfCS, it's not because I'm cheap, or
because I don't want to subscribe to a XS magazine. I just don't want to
subscribe to *that* one. Like Jenn, I just didn't find enough in there to
justify keeping the subscription.

That`s the truth of the matter - like you, I often picked it up but found
little to appeal. In fact I`ve stopped subscribing to cross stitch mags
completely - you get so much that is of no interest, and as for
information - you get far more on here!!!

Hi Karen

I almost HATE to remember this myself!

I worked part-time after school, while in college, for a small
magazine publisher. I say small because their circulation was only
150,000 subscribers and 35,000 OTC (over the counter).

I'm sure the following is true for MOST publishers.
The subscription price of the magazine (from the publisher) is often
less than postage.
In other words, they make no profit at all from selling subscriptions.
Subscription prices are usually set by magazine distribution
companies. Who, by the way, often do not pay for the magazines
themselves, because they handle the cost of getting them in bulk from
the publisher to their docks.

Certain fees are charged by the publisher for applying the
subscription labels if they are requested to handle that service, etc.

The publisher usually makes their money strictly from the advertising
placed in the magazine.

Most often, your best articles (and more of them) are found in the
smaller magazines. And small magazine companies try not to break up
the articles as much as larger magazine publishers do, in order to
squeeze in all those ads. And naturally, every advertiser wants their
ad amid the articles so they get seen.

There are a great many folks out there that will not buy magzines that
have articles continued several times on different pages. Every
magazine we get, the articles fill at least a full column per page,
usually more, and are consecutive, no skipping to page 36, then 52,
then 78, etc.

In closing, if your paying more than regular postage for a magazine
subscription, which is often sent bulk rate anyhow. Your filling some
distributors pockets with the excess.

Per issue price for OTC magazines usually goes to the distributor as
well.

Pat,
I agree with you. I've stopped subscribing to all but ONE magazine and that is
Sampler and Antique Needlework. This is a magazine I cannot buy over the
counter locally. Other magazines consistently offer patterns that I do not
like. As my preferences become more complex, the magazines seemed to become
more simple in their designs. I felt like I was wasting my money.

At a recent EGA meeting, I rifled through the magazines on the hostess's coffee
table and found one, Stitcher's World, that appealed to me. So much so, that I
immediately ordered a subscription. It's full of of graphs/charts, some of
which even I who has trouble counting stitches can follow g:

Too bad Herrschners flushed the entire magazine staff, including the editor,
down the toilet not too long ago. I had thought about paying the extra for
an international subscription...but not if the both the subscribers and the
editing staff are treated so shamefully.

Oh well. SW was one of the few magazines I still liked, until Herrschners
decided to abuse it's ownership. I guess I'm down to getting seed catalogs
from the UK now. *sigh*

When word first started going around that they were ceasing
publication, the topic came up for discussion on one of the message
boards I read. One person who was apparently a fan of this rag took
vehement exception when I called the designs "insipid."
