1. The Many Layers of Donald Stuart
By Barbara Isherwood

Someone once called Donald Stuart a Renaissance Man, an that doesn't
seem too far from the truth. In a career that has stretched over 35
years, Stuart has mastered the arts of gold and silversmithing, textile
weaving, and woodworking. He has taught jewelry-making around the
globe, has founded a unique postsecondary jewelry program, and is an
acknowledged leader in the craft world. Not content with his long list
of achievements, exhibitions, commissions, titles, awards, and
accolades, Stuart presses on, creating "Souvenirs," a new body of work
that combines his uncanny design sense and signature inlay technique
with a personal iconography that is a fresh element in his work....

2. An Introduction to the Flex-shaft System
By Karen Christians

The flex-shaft is a wonderful tool - but one that jewelers rarely use
to its maximum advantage. Usually the first piece of serious equipment
in which hobbyists or graduate jewelry students invest, the flex-shaft
system makes bench work much easier: It reduces effort and fatigue,
enhances production, and can be used for a variety of tasks, from
scraping wafer-thin pieces of wax to grinding down larger pieces of
metal for hollowware. Despite this, the tool's accessories, power
specifications, and range of uses have remained a mystery to many. This
book is intended to solve that problem: It will attempt to demystify
the flex-shaft system, and to educate each reader in how to use this
essential tool to its full potential....

3. AJM Innovation Awards 2005
By AJM

AJM Magazine has announced the winners of the second annual AJM
Innovation Awards. These awards recognize technologies that are making
a difference in the jewelry manufacturing industry today, and will
continue to do so in the future....

4. A Micro Vacuum Cleaner for Enamelists
By Peter Grigg

This article describes a micro vacuum cleaner, based on an aquarium
pump, for use by enamelists. The vacuum cleaner allows for cleaning up
sifted or spilled enamel. It offers an alternative to wet packing when
doing cloisonne, and you can use it to create lines and designs. There
are probably lots more uses that I haven't thought of....

5. Making a Silver Chain Using Pulse-Arc-Welding Technology
By Mark B. Mann

This sterling silver chocker chain is handmade from 16 gauge round
wire. It has multiple interlocking links. The customer leads a very
active lifestyle and has small children so she prefers the links be
permanently closed....

6. Product Testing: 3M FX Polishing Wheels
By James Cantrell,

When AJM asked me to test the new 3M FX Polishing Wheels, I was
reminded of a neat factoid: The House of Faberge didn't have the fancy
technologies - laser welders, CAD/CAM, etc. - we have today, yet the
objects of art they produced are in collections and museums worldwide.
Think-ing of this, I wondered if these new polishing wheels would
really outshine the more basic tools on my bench. I decided to find
out....

7. Product Testing: CAD/CAM LMR Mold Compound
By J. Tyler Teague

The new Romanoff LMR is a clear silicone RTV (room temperature
vulcanizing) liquid mold rubber compound with a platinum-containing
catalyst, which makes it ideal for use by jewelry manufacturers. Curing
can be heat-accelerated, but the compound does not require heat to
cure, so it is ideal for delicate wax models and intricate resin
patterns produced by rapid prototype (RP) systems....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Product Review: Stuller's Burnishing Compound MF610
By Mark B. Mann

After several years of use, the small stainless-steel pins in my
magnetic finisher had became dark, were stuck together and yielding
poor results when tumbling precious metal mountings. Seeking advice for
improvement, I turned to Andy Kroungold, Stuller's tool specialist....
