1. The Architectural Portraits of Vicki Ambery-Smith
By Deirdre O'Day

For nearly 30 years, Ambery-Smith has been using architecture as an
inspiration for her work. Her name has become synonymous with finely
wrought precious metal jewelry, boxes, and condiment sets whose
inspiration lies in Renaissance, Palladian, and classical architectural
precedents: a pendant based on the fifteenth-century Florentine
architect Brunelleschi's lantern, for example, or the Temple of Jupiter
brooch, an exercise in pure classicism. Her work is represented in
galleries, museums, and private collections in Europe, the United
States, and around the world....

2. The Cheapside Hoard
By Erika Speel

A cache of treasures that had lain hidden for some 300 years was
unearthed in 1912, during excavation work in the Cheapside area of
London. This was therefore known as the Cheapside Hoard and it is a
collection of considerable historical importance. The pieces that
comprise the Cheapside Hoard are chiefly in the Museum of London, and
the most important items of jewellery are on permanent display. The
collection, since its discovery has been an unparalleled marker for
secular objects made prior to the second half of the 17th century.
Indeed, so little comparative jewellery has survived th at the
discovery of the Hoard has been described as the finding of a 'time
capsule'....

3. Jewels Made of Paper Bags
By Karola Braun-Wanke

For a long time now in artisan jewelry work, all that glitters is not
gold. Precious metals, diamonds, and pearls now have competition. Four
Berlin-based designers allow themselves the luxury of blazing new
trails with unusual materials such as skin, paper bags, cardboard,
plant fibers, glue, felt, and fur. What unites all four of these
jewelry designers together is the fact that they learned a traditional
artisan craft, but longed to experiment with atypical materials and
forms of expression even before they had finished their studies....

4. Avoiding Destructive Tack-Welds when Tack-Welding
By Mark B. Mann

As a technical adviser to bench jewelers I often troubleshoot tack-,
fusion- and pulse-arc-welding applications. One of the more frequently
asked questions is related to what causes destructive tack-welds.
Destructive tack-welds fail at temporarily welding the parts and often
result in damage such as arcing, surface splatter, part deformation,
excessive soot and permanent weld joints....

5. Jewelry Retail Entrepreneur Michael Gerwig Goes CAD/CAM
By Mark B. Mann

After 30 years in the jewelry industry working as a bench jeweler,
sales professional, manager and owner, Michael Gerwig had a very clear
image of how he wanted to establish and build his new store in
Fayetteville, AR. He envisioned Michael-Seigler Jewelry & Design as a
unique jewelry design and custom manufacturing salon built exclusively
on the foundation of CAD/CAM technology....

6. Superb Mographs About Three Contemporary Metalsmiths
By Toni Greenbaum

Superb mographs about three contemporary metalsmiths have recently
become available: Ah Xian -- a Chinese sculptor who uses time-honored
practices from the land of his birth, such as pierced and/or painted
and glazed porcelain, carved lacquer, jade inlay and, especially,
cloisonne enamel, to create exquisite, life-size human figures; Michael
Rowe -- a British modernist whose "deconstructed" silver and patinated
brass tabletop objects have set the standard for avant-garde holloware
around the world; and Tone Vigeland, the legendary Norwegian jeweler,
who combines tiny, identical units of hammered silver or steel,
evocative of Vikin mail and Nordic landscapes, to make both wearable
pieces and large-scale sculpture....
