Default Newbie needs to know where to start

Hello,

I'm a newbie to sewing and I'd like to learn how. I've bought myself
a cheap machine to get started on, but I'm not sure where would be
best to start. I can't attent any classes because of my schedule.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Readers Digest Complete Book of Sewing is a good book on sewing. I learned
alot from it.
A cheap machine might give you problems. If it does don't get discouraged.
Go look at used and reconditioned machines. You can get a pretty good
machine for not alot of money buying used or reconditioned.

Kate, I really should put your site in it's own folder. It's a priceless
source of information

Take a look round my web site. There are notes there on basic seams and
finishes, a glossary of sewing terms, and a booklist that will steer you
towards some useful reading. I don't sell anything - it's all just
information.

Think first of all about what u want to sew. Not everyone does garment
construction.

I work with a lot of vintage fabrics. I like to sew slip covers, and
do minor alterations.

Also, I do a lot of basic repairs on still good textiles. Tailoring
and garment construction are very specific forms of sewing. Unless one
wanted to go into sewing professionally, it's not necessary to know
how to tailor clothes.

Get a sewing book. It will instruct u in the basics.
