I do like the blue wash-out pens, but this pencil is great for colors that I can't usually mark easily. Oh, and my newest "like" in this department is the Press & Seal. It makes it possible to avoid having to have a template or light box/sunny window, and you can machine quilt right through it. However, I wouldn't want to hand quilt with it! g -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas my ISP is earthlink.net -- put sfoster1(at) in front http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1 AKA Dame Sandy, Minister of Education |

For dark fabrics, what my Dad used to call the "irreducible minimum" of hand soap. (Not the liquid, which most folks seem to use nowadays - I'm old-fashioned and use the solid stuff!) When you have a thin sliver of it, the mark is clear, and brushes off when you want it to. Wendy (not Joe - he's the color consultant and computer maven) |

In addition to all the other things that have been mentioned, I use
Crayola washable markers. They wash out nicely. I try to use a color that gives me enough contrast to see the marked lines, but won't be too noticeable if washing leaves a trace of color (for example, I use blue to mark light blue), but I have never had them not wash out completely. When using stencils, I use the Quilt Pounce. I just got it and really like
it. I use it on my frame for machine quilting. It wouldn't work for hand quilting tho. The last thing I used for hand quilting was a light pencil. I haven't finished the project so I don't know if the pencil will come out. It has been a few years now sigh since I started it. I didn't really answer the question, now, did I? Sorry......... :-) Laurie G. "Julia in MN" wrote in message ... In addition to all the other things that have been mentioned, I use Crayola washable markers. They wash out nicely. A friend of mine did use the Press & Seal with a hand quilting project and
she said it wasn't a problem. Dee in LeRoy, NY "Sandy Foster" wrote in message ... Stright grid, masking tape for hand quilting, pounceline for machine Machined motifs or endless non-straightlines on fabric that isn't too dark, crayola washables Motifs or complex designs by hand, or machined on dark fabric, chalk or a white conte or yarka crayon _Really_ complex patterns (machine or hand), dressmakers carbon. I am planning on giving press and seal a shot sometime soon, I have messed about with it but haven't used it for a serious application yet. All the soap in the house is either liquid, glycerine, or special application, plus I tend to have bad reactions to a goodly number of commercial soaps, so I have never done the drawing with soap trick. I purely despise those vanishing markers. Not only do they vanish at the most inconvienient moment, but that purple doesn't really show very well on anything but truly light colors. Aha......... for black and darks I love the Clover fine line white
marking pen. It does come off with moisture and/or the iron. makes a nice fine line. But remember that it takes a few seconds to dry and show up. I also like my soapstone pencil, and the white pencil that has a "natural" wood outer part that I get from TreadleArts out of CA. (Just went and got one, says "General's * Charcoal white * No.558.) I am also testing out the Roxanne's Quilter's Choice pencils in silver and white. They are supposed to be quite good, i f they haven't been dropped and broken inside. Good luck.
