I am considering a new Ott-lite and wondering if anyone has had experience
with the lites. Have read reviews on the floor lamps and the reviews
indicate the floor lamp does not stand well and falls. Also, what can
anyone tell me about the other brands, is there a better lite for less money
then the ott-lite. When the eyes get some age on them kind of need some
help with a bright lite for emboridery and hand quilting. Any help from any
one sure would be helpful. Thanks much.

I have a table type ott lite. It is about 12" high. I
use mine a lot for just about everything. I love it.
I bought it at half price at Joann's. They run about
$70 but I got mine for $35.

Oh baloney. Bologna? Something. My Ott floor lamp stands just fine. Does
90 to 100 mph winds for over 10 hours trying to shake the house down seem
like an adequate test? How about a houseful of evacuated Yorkies looting
and pillaging? I guess I could go stand it in the middle of I-10 or the
nearest day care center to be really certain, but mine's never even wobbled.
I love it. It is very kind to my old eyes.
To be fair, I also have a Dazor. It's a round lighted / magnifying sort
that is needed now and then for tiny fine unstitching and toenail clipping.
It may be possible to find something just as good for less $s. It may
be possible for a happy 100 pound puppy to take the Ott down; but I can
happily recommend it. You might ask our Patti in Seattle. She has a Big
puppy. Polly

I'd been nagging my husband for months (read a couple years) to get me an
ott-lite or similar as the overhead in the lounge was too dim to quilt by.
Anyways I came home the other night to see a standing lamp (does not match
our decor or anything but quite nice) and when he switched it on (it has a
sliding dimmer switch) you could sunbake by it it's so daylight like! It's
a Kambrook standing halogen lamp (NAYY just very happy) which he'd picked up
from Bunnings (our Home Depot type place). When he told me the price I very
nearly fell over.... wait for it.......$7. yup that's it. Very Happy
Customer.

I skipped the expensive and ugly Ott type lamps and bought the 3 way
"Reveal" daylight bulbs for my own lamps. I buy the 3 way bulbs
because I can choose the level of brightness I need for whatever I am
doing, brightest for needlework and the two dimmer levels for other
times. Same great "true color" lighting but it looks better since the
bulbs can go in any lamp, and it costs so much less.

I got a floor lamp for my birthday, and I like it very much. Very sturdy - I
don't think I could knock it over if I tried! My only complaint is that I
wish it adjusted a bit higher - I have it over my work table, which is
cutting height, and the lamp gets in the way sometimes.

I own four Ott lights (all bought at Jo Ann's with 40% off coupons)
and like them. The bulbs last for years and I have never had a problem
with them being unstable. I do think they are over priced. Several
friends have bought very similar lights at a local close-out bargain
store and they are just as good for 10% of the price of an Ott light.
I don't think the bulb is as important as the location of the bulb in
relation to your work. If I had to do it over again I don't think I
would purchase an Ott light but look for a good reading lamp that
would work well with the task.

I've had my floor model Ott-light for almost 5 years; it's never
threatened to fall over. I bought it mainly for embroidery, and it makes
a huge difference in using the correct green out of 10 similar ones. I
liked it enough to buy the task light for travel use; you know how dark
motel rooms are. That one lives by the SM and is most helpful in
choosing thread colours for garment sewing and such.

Howdy!
I think that's the important thing, Susan,
to have really good light, whatever the brand,
so we can *see* ! g
Gene brought home a floor model lamp from Sharper Image
(he had some gift certificates to spend) :
http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/ca.../sku__SI448CHR
We love it; it's bright, adjustable (dimness and height), sturdy base,
and I can *see* (handquilter).
In-laws gave us a Tensor Vision Max, for Christmas
http://www.lampsusa.com/index.asp?Pa...D&ProdID=11219
Clear, bright daylight type light; great for the table.
There's a swing-arm, adjustable lamp I got in the office supply dept.
for clamping onto the dining table when I use the sewing machine;
works fine. Light! Light! Light!

I have a floor Ott-lite and have found it to be just wonderful. It
doesn't put off heat like a normal light and it doesn't tip over. I
also wanted to pass on something i found by accident. I was in
Wal-Mart one day and they had a few clearance items over by hardware
and they had 13-watt bulbs that looked like my Ott-lite bulb marked
down to $2.50. I bought one, tried it in my Ott-lite and it worked
great!!!! Couldn't tell the difference from the original Ott-lite
bulb!!! I believe they originally sold these as bulbs for Coleman
lanterns. Anyway............I bought all six that they had for $15.00!
They normally run about $13 each.
