successfully rehardened cheap palm gouges
Greetings,
I got a set of those crummy ebay palm gouges to practice sharpening. I have decent Acorn and Pfeil to carve with. The other day I grabbed the ebay set to work on some detail the "real" gouges were too big for. Disgusted with the resulting curled-up cutting edges, I figured, "Why not?" Pulled the handles off, heated in a propane torch, water quenched, and tempered. Oh, what a difference it made! I've had a little experience with hardening and tempering steel; don't expect good results unless you've practiced first. -- "Keep your ass behind you" wreck20051219 at spambob.net |
