Default I need a challenge.

Actually, there are lots of things that are challenging but I'm just feeling
up for a game here. I'm afraid of what I'm asking for, but anyway...

I took a one-day Jennifer Geldard lampworking class this weekend and it
really made a difference at how I look at beadmaking right now. I don't
think it was any one particular thing that she taught or said, but all of
them together and the planets being aligned, I feel like anything is
possible right now (except for the two things I mention below) and I feel
like I've been let out of a cage.

So, with that said, I need a challenge from you. Is that proper grammar?
I'm asking you for a challenge, not giving you a challenge. I know I won't
be able to do all of them and I really don't know what I'm actually asking
for but, if you catch any of my drift....what would a cool focal bead be in
your eyes? Shape, colors, size, decoration, etc. I'm not asking you to
design it, I'm just asking for what kinds of components do you like? Two
restrictions...I cannot, and am not interested in, doing anything realistic
(don't expect a horse or dog from me) and as great as Jennifer is, I don't
believe she has a recipe for opaque hot pink, so I don't have that mystery
solved. )

Think you can help me? I'll show all that I come up with!

Thanks in advance!!

ok, I'll put one out for ya...I'm looking at a lot of blue/white indigo dyed
kimono cloth patterns right now. Show me something that sings of Japanese
textiles and the summer sky in evening.

Do you know that poem where a goblin tries to get "your green glass
beads" from a mermaid (or water nymph-?)? Make those! All briny and
seaweedy and glassy from seawater.

Ok, this is going to be fun. I was worried for a second! I have these down
and I'm heading over to the torch.

I'll have to do a little research for yours, SaraJane, because I don't know
much about Japanese textiles, but I'm up for it.

I'll check back later and THANKS!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with, Lori--and what others
come up with for ideas!

Holland in Spring a la the Impressionists

A bead or series of beads proclaiming the arrival of Spring as seen in
the rioting vibrant colors of tulips and crocus and hyacinth and
daffodils and the rich greens of new leaves...... (I get first dibs!)

God but I hate Minnesota by the time March rolls around. I am sooooooo
desparate for color and life and warm and vibrancy.

Up here one of the large greenhoues sponsors a Cancer fundraiser the
first week in March by selling bunches of cut, budded daffodils.
(Usually 10 stalks for $7.00) You put them in water and you can watch
them open up. I bought myself 2 bunches, and 3 of the directors I
currently support each bought me a bunch. I took my large glass cookie
jar, filled it with water and put all 50 daffodil stalks in there. I
have a blooming bunch of daffodils that is almost 18" around and fully
packed. Martha would be pround.

Oh, Sarajane! I went in search today on the internet and you opened up so
much inspiration! That coupled with the new enamel skills I've acquired is
going to be a good match. I can't wait to try yours tomorrow!

For years now I've wanted to re-create a watery, silk painting kind of look
of magentas and turquoises and blues and I think I might be on the right
track now. Not that I'll get the exact colors, but I'm hoping for at least
the effect. I will keep you posted!

Lori, I'm so glad that you like the direction the research is taking you on
this challenge, and I am looking forward to seeing what you do! I'm feeling
a blue and white Orientalia phase myself, having been "immersed" though not
literally, for a few months at least) in lots of dyeing. Indigo is so
versatile and gorgeous---making from pale green to darkest midnight
blue/black. If you are out there surfing, look for "shibori" (wrapped dye
technique) and "sashiko" (white embroidery technique on indigo cloth).
Have fun!!! (sounds like you are!) and btw-- I've always thought that Tamari
(wrapped colored thread) balls would be good designs made into glass

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Tamari balls. I actually attempted to do something
like that early on in lampworking when Corina had a challenge. Ugh. Do not
try this as a beginner. ) I think I've seen some of the Japanese
lampworkers mimmick that technique in glass.
