Hi,
I have an exceptional piece of lapis, that I want to cut. My trim saw uses oil to cut with. Will oil harm this gemstone? If I were you, I'd drain the oil from the saw & use water to cut the lapis. Lapis is a relatively soft material & water will work fine for keeping the saw cool & clearing the swarf. If oil is used, the lapis may absorb enough of it to affect it's appearance. You may also need to leave the lapis in kitty litter or whatever you use to absorb the oil for a much longer period of time than a stone like quartz. Dave |

oil to cut with. Will oil harm this gemstone? I was taught to use water instead of oil with Lapis but I can't find any references saying exactly why. I seem to remember that the oil would discolor the stone. Water works just fine so I never bothered to experiment. |
