triangles, dratted things
How about using the HST method. This is where you mark a diagonal line with a
pencil through a square which is cut bigger to allow for seam allowance.ie: for a 4 1/2" square you will need to cut the 2 squares 4 7/8th "Put this right sides together with the 2nd colour square and sew a 1/4 " seam either side of the pencil line and then cut apart through the line.Open up and there you have it.2 half square triangles! Hope this helps as it eliminates the stretch on the bias edge.Estelle uk"Martha" wrote in message m... I am piecing my first quilt that uses triangles to make squares, and already I am thinking how much better mannered squares are! How do I get the triangles not to stretch, move in seam allowance, or otherwise fuss at me when I try to sew them into squares? Would a walking foot help, do you think? The triangles are cut so that the long edge is bias, which is the problem of course. The bias edges will be inside the block when I'm done [Friendship Star]. I always add another 1/8", so your squares would be 5" instead of 4 7/8"
After sewing your HST and cutting them apart, then trim them down to 4 1/2". Takes care of any variances in sewing & your HST blocks are always all the same size. -- Donna in Idaho Website: www.LinusIdaho.org "Estelle Gallagher" wrote in message ... Strip quilting: Put your two fabrics together, cut the strips on the
bias, so up one side, down the other, cut into triangles, pull threads at tops, press.
