Default results from mystery quilts

Ok, my post about the not so happy dance quilt made me realise that this
is the second mystery quilt I've made and the second one I really didn't
like.

I made one at New Year's a couple of years ago and I didn't care for the
way it turned out at all. The pattern was nice, the fabric was nice, but
I didn't like the placement. Someone ended up taking it home after
admiring it one time too many. ;-) I wish I could remember who!

Anyway, the same with the one I asked you all about. The pattern is
nice, the fabric is nice, but I just don't care for the placement of it.
That has to be it, why would I dislike it otherwise.

I think that although I am really good about experimenting with colour
and, if you look at my quilts, you'll see a great combination of
traditional and bright quilts - but the difference might be that I chose
where to put what fabrics and in what design.

How do others feel about mystery quilts?

I am trying my first one with my guild (which reminds me I missed the
meeting lastnight and need to call someone to get this months
instructions...) So far I am loving it - but the ladies running it were
VERY helpful with fabric selection. They brought in lots of samples and
took at look at what we had picked out prior to giving us our first set
of cutting instructions. They gave advice as to whether or not they
thought the fabrics would work where you had chosen to put them.

I have to say that the fabric "thing" is what has kept me away from
mysteries in the past. I can't be told one dark, one light and four
mediums - not shown a pattern and have any idea how to pick the colors...

I hope this one turns out as cool as I think it is going to. I do have
to say though - I really stuck to closely related fabrics. I didn't go
to far out of my comfort range on this one

I've done two mystery quilts. I had a similar experience with the first
one -- not satisfied with the fabric placement or selection, because
there wasn't enough contrast between some adjacent pieces. I ended up
taking some contrasting embroidery floss and weaving it through the SITD
quilting between the two colors, and that helped. I'm very pleased with
the second one, though. Now to get it quilted...

I did one. It is a pretty ugly quilt. That was enough for me.
I'll take my mysteries in a book from here on out.

Your photos are fun to see. That dwr is so beautiful.
I am trying to figure out if I think Oscar is lucky with all the
'duds' he has or if I should feel sorry for him VBG He is
really a beautiful dog. So glad he found a good home. I have a
question. Is that a wood floor his tongue is 'stuck' to or laminate.
Either way how is it holding to a big dog romping on it? We are trying
to decide what to do about floors with all the wild things running the
house here.

I've been intruiged by mystery quilts, but since I'm such a control freak, I
can't bear the thought of someone else making the big decisions for me!
Plus, I have yet to see one that uses 20+ fabrics in it - practically a
minimum for me! Perhaps I'll challenge myself and do one sometime.

I have only done one mystery, and the shop provided the fabrics. It
was butt ugly. They knew what contrast to pick, so that part turned
out alright, but I think they used thier ugly fabric to get rid of it.
I wouldn't do that again.

I like the idea of a mystery, but alas, I am a control freak too!! I
just can't bring myself to do one.

I have started a second one which I am less invested in. It is
supposed to be a donation in the first place, so it was released before
it was started. I did not keep up with the mystery, so I know what it
will look like. It is going to be pretty nice. Releasing it
beforehand helped, but it didn't hurt that I didn't spend $8 or $9 per
yard on fabric either!

I'd like to do another one at a late nighter at a shop though! Mainly
to hang out with friends and eat chocolate!

I don't like mystery quilts at all. I took an all day class and we were
supposed
to finish a quilt top that day...but just a few of us actually finished one
block !!
I think we were sewing all blocks at the same time so that delayed getting
it done .
I , too, disliked the [placement...although I did like the fabrics. I
finished them
when I got home...had it prof. quilted and gave it to the local senior
citizen home.
One nice thing is that I got to meet two quilt group chatters and had a fun
day with them
but I'd never do another mystery.

Interesting question, Marijke.
My answer: I would never even contemplate one. Boring, perhaps; but I
do like to have my complete idea in my mind before I start. I would
find no pleasure in sailing in uncharted waters.
So, I think that's why Pat's reply to your original question is a really
good idea. For one thing, it will have given you some input to the
design! And it really will connect the colour of those outer corners,
which are so different, to the rest of the quilt.

I've done 2. The 1st was totally scrappy but color coordinated in blue and
white, light-med-dark. It came out extremely well. The 2nd was also scrappy,
and directions said to find a bunch of light to med floral FQs with a
med-dark background. I did just that and dislike the results. It's not a bad
quilt really, others have said they like it, but it just doesn't appeal to
me. Even though the individual fabrics were OK to start with. I agree, it's
a placement issue. And if I'd known the end objective, I would have picked
quite a few different fabrics.

I have made two, each at a retreat. They both look great. The first
went together easily and got mostly done at retreat. The second was
hellacious to make! I barely made any progress at retreat (and had
the same amount of work time as the first one) and it was a very
fiddly quilt to make.
The key difference turned out to be that the first quilt had been made
elsewhere by our retreat leader. She was able to provide some good
suggestions about fabric choices and knew it would be done in time.
The second one had not been made by that retreat leader. She had seen
a completed one and was aware of how striking it is. However she did
not know how long it would take or how poorly the directions were
written.
In both instances I used a controlled array of fabrics, selected for
high contrast. My choices tend to be scrappy so this was a change for
me. I also gave each of them away, which freed me to consider some
different (for me) color choices.
I would make another one (if I knew that someone had actually tested
it out for being doable) in a retreat setting, it was very fun to see
how the different color choices in the group influenced the final look
of the quilt.
