Default needle position on an old White

A student brought in an old White sewing machine to class...I'd guess
1960-something. [Weighs a ton--there's not a bit of plastic on the whole
machine!] It has a zig-zag adjustment with a sliding bar from 1-8, plus two
little silver knobs that seem to move with the zig zag. My problem? We can't
figure out how to move the needle for straight stitch -- currently it's set
far left, and we'd like it in the middle or toward the right. Any ideas?

I have a White, about the same age (mine is a Model 167). My sliding
bar goes 1 to 2-4 to 3 then M. I have to keep it on M for straight
stitching, and both knobs have to be pushed together to the extreme
left. Hers sounds a bit different, but maybe this will work.

The old New Home I got last weekend does this too.

)
I am an old White, model 1953. My father is an even older model White
1917.
The best needle position for me is in my left hand since I am
left-handed.

Sorry, just couldn't help it........
[maiden name was White, it's now my middle name]

Ahhh, but Whites are like the Energizer bunny; they keep going and going
and . . .
