It can't take an antibacterial coating well, so it gets stinky fast. Polyesters are better. I use Powerdry almost exclusively. BTW - does anyone know of an antibacterial that can be added to a fabric that's had its factory coat washed out? Mike No, but do look at the newer fabrics: some of them have it embedded in the fibres so it never washes out! Also, it and the fabrics with wicking properties should never be washed with fabric conditioner. If you did a load with conditioner by mistake, it can take 2 or 3 washes without to get rid of it. -- Kate XXXXXX Lady Catherine, Wardrobe Mistress of the Chocolate Buttons http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk Click on Kate's Pages and explore! |

Walmart has long underwear that are not the waffle knit type. They don't add much bulk and are comfy. Probably few of them left at this point in the season though. My personal experience has been that the waffle knit type in a synthetic fiber are warmer than anything else out there. Waffle knit cotton is not bad, but for the same amount of warmth it is bulkier than the synthetics. I haven't seen the Cuddl Duds that BEI Design mentioned, but they sound like they would be very good; the brushed fleece on the inside really does help make long johns warmer and more comfortable. I've no idea what the temperatures might be in Chicago on St. Patricks, but it has a reputation for being the "windy city;" wind and humidity can certainly create a huge risk for hypothermia and general misery. I'd vote for the warmest thing you can find; it might be for only one day, but hypothermia is really dangerous. -- Kathy - shivering at -50 F/-47 C this morning where I live Good Net Keeping Seal of Approval at http://www.gnksa.org/ OE-quotefix can fix OE: http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/ |

Raye Ahn wrote: I'd love to find the fabric and make some more, as the Cuddle Duds are a little pricey, about $20 each, top or bottom. You can find them just about anywhere; department stores, online, etc. I did find some at a discount store for $5.00 a piece, but I don't think I'll be able to do that again! Filene's Basement has them at $6.99 per piece. I guess I have to go back. -Charlotte |

I don't know the extent of the Filene's empire. The original basement is here in Boston, MA, USA. Yeah - I remember when it was the basement department of Filene's Department Store in Boston. Now it's a widespread chain. Kind of like I remember when the Burlington Coat Factory was the grungy factory outlet store of the factory in Burlington NJ.
