Default Skirt Patterns

Hi there, I just picked up a large cache of stretchy fabric that I want to
turn into several skirts.

I'd like some recommendations on skirt patterns and the like. These will be
worn by me (Male, 6'0) size 16-18.

Also does anyone have sewing tips for this sort of fabric? some of the
fabric is 90% cotton 10% lycra some is 90%polyester 10% lycra. Any Ideas?

Thanks -J

Are these skirts for you to be as a costume? A Kilt? or what? It all
depends on what style that person is really interested in. I myself hate
dresses and skirts, more because I'm overweight, and when I wear them, my
thighs rub together and get a bit raw. And I also despise panty hose, so I
just stick with pants, mostly pull on pants, I don't even like to wear
jeans. If or when I get to lose some of this weight, that may be a
different story, but I really don't have anyplace to wear dresses or skirts.
here is a free pattern for a 6 gore skirt:
http://patternsthatfityou.com/frskirtcl.htm

As for the sewing tips, You may want to use a small zig-zag seam, that way
the seam will stretch with the material.

Take a look at Stretch & Sew patterns: they are for this type of
fabric. Choose patterns according to the amount of stretch in the
fabric. They also produce a good little book on sewing with this type
of fabric that will teach you how to determine how much stretch you
have, and how to get the best results from your pattern.

As for how to sew it, from the best down:

Serger with stretch/jersey/ball point/knit needles (needle according to
type of cloth: you'll need to experiment a bit with each cloth), and
woolly nylon in the loopers

If no serger available, the same type of needle in a regular sewing
machine, and use a small narrow zigzag stitch. There are lots of good
tips on sewing this type of fabric in the Stretch & Sew book.

It is possible to sew this type of fabric with a straight stitch only
machine, but again, experiment to get the best needle for each cloth,
and learn the 'taut sewing' technique: you stretch the fabric, pulling
equally both before and behind the needle, keeping the fabric taut, and
allowing the feed dogs to pull the fabric through the machine. NEVER
pull the fabric through the machine: you could bend and break the
needles, causing expensive to repair damage to the machine.

There is a good thread--or 2---or 3--currently running on the subject
of kilts; perhaps, though, you are looking for something different.
Evening wear? Pageant or impersonation nights?
http://www.vogue.com
http://www.butterick.com
http://www.mccalls.com
or some original designs: (Burda, Neue Mode, Lois Hinse, Lois Erickson,
Fred Bloebaum, Park Bench, Christine Jonson, etc): Last time I checked,
Free Shipping!! and, use and review a pattern, and get the pattern free:
http://www.pattern showcase.com
Depending on your end use, you may want a style either with some
fullness, (see the kilt posts), or which flares from the high hip, to
avoid over-exposure. Generally, though, lycra blends are useful in more
fitted styles, as the lycra provides stretch and comfort.
I favor cotton/poly thread, a stretch or yellow band (Singer) needle,
and a fairly long, relaxed stitch length.

Shadowboxer, what specifically is the skirt for? Are you interested in a
skirt or a kilt? There is a difference. Is it for formal, semi-formal or
casual? I'd need to know before I could recommend anything. For example, a
skirt would be measured at the fashion waist while a kilt is measured at the
natural waist. The common measurement is the widest part of the hip, around
the biggest part of your fanny. There are simply too many variables
concerning male unbifurcated garments. I also recommend having a look at
Tom's Cafe forum, it's for men in skirts and kilts. The URL is
http://www.tomscafe.org/forums/. Answer my questions above and I might be
able to help you out some.
