Default What makes a mystery sampler a mystery?

I keep seeing people talking about "mystery" pieces - mostly samplers.

What is a mystery piece? Is it just the serial nature of it? Is there a
hidden message? A bit of code?

Inquiring minds want to know!

There's no picture of the finished piece, so you won't know what it
looks like until you've finished it.

And it is usually a serial piece with multiple parts. I've done some that
have between 3 and 6 parts. If you would like to see an example
http://community.webshots.com/album/362203390wzLuqK is a link to my WIP page
showing a couple of mysteries by Pam Kellogg. The first on the page (Winter
into Spring) came in 4 blocks. The second (Garden Jewels) came in 6 (I
think).
