In this hands-on workshop, Brian Ransom will demonstrate many of the
throwing, handbuilding and assembling techniques he uses in creating
his unique sounding ceramic sculptures and musical instruments. You
will have the opportunity to make and tune your own during the
workshop. There will be discussions regarding clay bodies, firing
techniques (particularly vapor-firing) and both the formal and
informal sculptural processes Brian utilizes. Brian Ransom-sculptor,
potter, composer and performer-is Associate Professor of Visual Arts
at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. In addition to his
experimental ceramic sound works, Ransom is well known for his
unique sculptures from clay that serve as musical instruments. He
has made numerous recordings of original music in ensembles of his
own invention. Among the awards he has received are the
Fulbright/Hays Congressional Fellowship in Peru and the National
Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in sculpture. He has exhibited
nationally and internationally, and his work is included in numerous
museums and private collections.
