Default What to make for my niece?

Hi again!

My niece is being Christened soon, and I will be one of her godmothers.
Thus, I would like to give her a very special gift, but am at a bit of a
quandry as to what to make.

I thought an angel that could hang on the wall over her bed (or at least in
her room) would be nice. I have some lovely glazes I could use too.

But here's the thing.... I am very into making things that are useful. Mom
suggested I make an angel holding a cross, but then I think - ok - when she
is grown up, she can hang her necklaces on the cross, maybe!

Then I thought maybe if I made a hole - it could have a cross in it, and I
could make another "part" which was a tea-candle-holder. Or maybe the angel
watching over such a little dear should be holding something less "hard"
than a cross???

Also, I have one idea for having her kind of coming out of the wall - and
one that she is more hanging just next to the wall full figure.

I would really appreciate some creative input here, people! Work has to be
finished in less than a month!

Hugs all round! You guys are the greatest!

Marianne

How about an angel holding some Resurrection Lilies? Not so heavy,
still meaningful.

Except that I would have to "make" the lillies, and I am not that good! :-D

Thanks for thinking it over, though!

Angel a nice idea, why not throw some childrens bowls and plates too, so you
can give useful and just nice.

Interesting that you would consider angels but not plants...
I'm just the opposite! I've always figured that my not-quite-right
leaves and flowers won't be anywhere near as objectionable
as deformed faces and body parts. (Well, except for trolls
and the like... I'm OK at those.) I generally go with the idea that
my effort at depicting a plant will still look like *some* kind of
plant... I just don't divulge what it was *supposed* to be!

Works for me...

Best regards,

Angels can be stylised so that they do not have real features.
Someone I know made some lovely ones. Slabs formed into a tall cone, round
thing on top with halo around for head. Coil arms coming around to hold a
candle or the like, big wings. All done in porcelain with clear glaze and
then gold on wings and halo. Really lovely and the simplicity creates
elegance.

Welll - I don't throw well enough for them to be really nice, and, besides,
she is too little to be eating from them yet. I thought I would make that
either for Christmas or for her first birthday. I will be getting her a
necklace as well - hopefully an enameled heart with "Our Father" on the back
of it in teeny weeny writing - just like I had. Or maybe, if they aren't to
be bought these days, I could find mine - I am sure it is around here
somewhere.

Strangely enough, I have been pretty lucky with my faces, really. Not
perfect, by all means, but even my first attempt (which I think is my best)
turned out very well. It is a child's bust, which I moddled on pictures of
cute kids I found on the internet. My angel is all from my own head, made
for my mother's cousin. I think it turned out so nice, because I was
thinking of her all the time I was making it - it is "beautiful" (in my
eyes) - just like her soul.

The two garden gnomes I made, the faces were moddled on pics of old men and
santas I found on the internet. I am not good with hands, though, and I
could do better with mouths. Thus, I hope that my teacher does a nice, long
lesson with me, showing me better how to model faces and the proportions
needed this Friday.

ahhh - if you want to see the mentioned figures:

Just uploading the pics now - sorry that they are too big, but I don't have
time for finesses, as I have my "niece" visiting.
