Default painting a paneled door neatly?

The cottage has a pre-assembled door, which in my opinion, is no
favor. It's got four panels on each side, that have already been glued
down (and tightly, so I can't pop them off). I painted around the
panels, but I have no idea how to get the edges of the panels painted
without ruining the background.

Right now, I'm tempted to paint the panels the same color as the
background, just to save myself the hassle.

Is there any way to mask it off? Masking tape would be too thick
(would block a significant portion of the panel). Any other ideas?
Taping waxed paper in place?

Why not paint the panels and then use a very fine brush to do the
surrounding color from the panel to the frame surface? Then you could use
masking tape over the dry part of the frame to paint the rest (or paint very
carefully). There is also a blue painter's masking tape I haven't tried
yet, but read good things about.

Cathy,

There is a liquid masking that is made by a number of the craft paint
manufacturers. I'm sure Aleene's has it and at least a couple of
others. You paint it on, it dries, you paint whatever needs to be
painted, then peel off the masking.

Here's a couple of sources if you don't have a large craft store local
to you:

Careful of word wrap on the next one:

You could also use a shield, like is used along crown molding when
cutting in around a ceiling. Just a piece of thin, stiff plastic and
hold it against the portion of the door you don't want painted, then
if you have bristles slip, they're going to hit the plastic.

Another method, which is generally what I use -- I trim down an old
brush until it is very short and has very few bristles and then just
cut in along the edge with it.

Really, that's why RCD is here. We all help with what we know most
about and it makes the newsgroup a pretty useful resource. If you've
never seen the archives just go to Google and use
rec.crafts.dollhouses as your search parameter and you'll go right to
the newsgroup page. You can search all the non-spam messages posted
there since the newsgroup started.

I use MAGIC TAPE by 3M Scotch. I get very sharp edges when peeling off when
paint is "dustdry".
Masking Tape always give you torn edges.
