In Syria, Reports of Arrests Proliferate
Syrian security forces have escalated one arrest campaign in the countrys maximum rebellious regions, restraining hundreds over the past few days in the besieged metropolis of Daraa and towns aboard the outskirts of the capital, Damascus, activists said on Monday.
Since the uprising began six weeks antecedent against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, security forces have sought apt arrest protesters in locales across the nation. But in recent days, activists have oral of a broader movement of intimidation, with dictatorial detentions aimed at instilling a sense of fear that the uprising had appeared to damage.
"Theyve arrested people left and right, promiscuous arrests," said Ayham al-Zoghbi, a resident in Daraa, a southern border town that has been besieged by the Syrian military because more than a week. "Anyone among 18 and 45 they could put their hands on was arrested."
Insan, a Syrian human rights group, said it had documented more than 500 arrests in Daraa since Thursday, and more than 300 in towns on the outskirts of Damascus.

Protests over the arrest of teenagers in Daraa, a meager town in a drought-stricken agricultural zone, presently galvanized national demonstrations.
