Oh, man -- I know the tsunami isn't supposed to hit California, but now I'm
doubly grateful I left my NorCal beach house behind.........

That was my reaction too.... Let's see, how much seawater can backflow into
the Columbia (and from there into the Willamette)?

And my brother-in-law and his wife are flying up here in 2 days for a visit.
Wanted to take them over to the coast. Think there will be any coast left?
I hope the tsunami does not appear. Feel sorry for all those poor people in
Japan though......

Back in the early 80's when I was living in Aberdeen, Washington, we had a
tsunami warning. Where we lived was only 10' above sea level. We actually
had warning sirens go off all over town as well as having the emergency
broadcast system activated on the radio stations and warnings on the Seattle
TV stations. I don't believe the earthquake that prompted that warning was
anything near as big as these TWO today!

At first the DH & I didn't think too much of it, even though the whole thing
was scary to say the least. Finally we decided to go to one of the areas
that would be above any rising water to wait it out. At the estimated time
of arrival on the coast, the crowd of about 700 people around us looked west
towards the lights of Westport. We'd all decided that if it was a bad one,
the lights would go out. Nothing happened and 30 minutes later the all
clear sounded and we all went home. Found out later there actually had been
a rise in the ocean level - of three inches!

Of course, the big Alaskan earthquake in 1964 caused a tsunami along the
coast that killed several people in northern California who'd gone out on
the rocks to see the 'big wave' come in. So, it's always best to heed the
warnings. There's no way of telling if these two earthquakes generated
tsunamis until the times have passed for their estimated arrival. Let's
hope they didn't...

Oooh, Starlia - get those kids to high ground. Now's not the time to go
watching big waves. I am sure they will be fine, but...scary!
