Easy Knit Christmas Stocking Pattern?

Ok, my roomates and I decided to knit ourselves some christmas stockings to
hang on our mantle this year. And while I've been knitting for a while and
am fine turning a heel, the rest of them have enough trouble with garter
stitch.

Does anyone have any xmas stocking patterns which are either two flat peices
sewn together, or knit on circulars with a series of increases/decreases to
shape them? We want these stockings to be about 4-6" wide at the top...

Do you know how to crochet granny squares? I did stockings for my kids in
granny squares - just made them out of Christmas colours and sewed them
together to make a stocking. It worked fine.
Alternatively, knitting little squares would give the same result.
