Default New Singer Featherweight vs. Old Singer Featherweight

I am starting to take more quilting classes at my LQS and am
considering buying a machine to haul to and from. If DH can have his
hunting/fishing hobbies, so can I have my quilting....LOL.

I have been looking at the new featherweights and would like to know
how many spm (stitches per minute) they do, in comparison to the older
featherweights. I know the older featherweights are heavier, by about
5-10 lbs, but I know they are workhorses. The newer ones have more
stitches, obviously, but I am not sure if I will use them all.

Does anyone out there have any input for me?

Beth, if you check out the archives of Featherweight Fanatics, I think you
can find the answers. But, in short, the new ones don't hold a candle to
the older ones.

Beth:
The 'old' (I prefer the term Original FW cannot be 5-10 lb. more than
the new fw as they only weigh about 12 lb.. As far as stitches per
minute ... the old one goes quite fast enough for me, though it is
slower than my souped up computerized Pfaff, I doubt it is much slower
than that new fw. What's the rush? Besides, in class situation you are
probably going al little slower while you are learning or practicing a
new technique. When you can do it with confidence, you can go home and
use your faster SM. IMO ...

Hi Beth, YOu never answered the last msg. that a mess of us responded
to. Still curious why speed is so important.
If you don't want an old FW I'd still recommend the Janome Gem. My
favorite to piece on is a SInger 301. They go for under $100 and are
faster than the FW while easy to carry by the handle on the machine top.
Lightweight too.
New Featherweights not even worth the bother.

Thank you for posting this. At first, I thought I was losing my mind
because I knew I had posted a message, and replied to some, but they
didn't show up. That's when I thought I didn't post them at all.
I'll look for these somewhere and get some ideas. Thank you,
thank you, thank you!

I managed to find the previous thread, after much searching through
Google. I use Google Groups as my NG reader. The problem is, when I
do a search for my previous threads, I have to go through several
pages of old posts, some dated as far back as 1998, before I find
anything related to what I posted and then sometimes it doesn't show.

Does anyone who uses Google Groups have any tips as to how they find
their threads? I can't search on the subjects, nor can I search on
the poster names; only the dates appear in order and that's with the
original thread. I don't want to change if I can help it (too much
spam came through on my other reader, inspite of the bogus email
address).

I was thinking I didn't post this question previously; that for some
reason, it dropped out or I deleted it. Sorry if I caused any
problems, but those of you who were patient enough to repost your
answers, thank you very much!

Beth:
While I don't use the Google Groups, I have a suggestion. Play with your
NG Preferences and set it to hold the messages longer. Allow about 5
days so you can go back easily. You can just click "show unread" most
times, but can click "all" when you want to look back a few days. HTH.
As far as wondering if you in fact posted or if you are losing your mind
..... well, you are a quilter!! We've ALL BTDT in one way or another.
