I need info from our resident computer experts. I bought this laptop
last fall for a beautiful price, but it did not come with MS Office. I
didn't think I needed to buy it, as the only part of that suite I ever
used was to write letters, and I can do that anyway. HOWEVER, I notice
that a number of newsletters etc which come out are sent in MS Word,
which this is not going to open for much longer. Most of the time it is
not a problem., I simply download to my desktop, which does have Word
etc., but it occurred to me that if I were out of town for a long spell,
like after Katrina, I might not be able to open these things.

Sorry, that went too soon. The tech who I got to transfer everything
from the old machine to this one said "That is a beautiful machine!" but
it sometimes goes way too fast for me, and even occasionally does things
I hadn't told it to. Anyway, do any of our resident experts have any
advice for me?

I use Google docs and am happy with it. All the standard types can be
created: documents, spreadsheets, etc. I haven't had a problem
opening Word documents. Your documents are maintained in the cloud -
not on your computer, unless you choose to download.

If you have a Mac I can send you Microsoft Word, Excel and Power
Point, if not I think I may still have Microsoft Office if you want to
install it on your new machine.

Thank you, everyone. I have now downloaded and installed Open Office on
this computer, and will await the arrival of this month's various
newsletters to see how it works.
