Totally OT. Computer info needed
I need info from our resident computer experts. I bought this laptop last fall for a beautiful price, but it did not come with MS Office. I didn't think I needed to buy it, as the only part of that suite I ever used was to write letters, and I can do that anyway. HOWEVER, I notice that a number of newsletters etc which come out are sent in MS Word, which this is not going to open for much longer. Most of the time it is not a problem., I simply download to my desktop, which does have Word etc., but it occurred to me that if I were out of town for a long spell, like after Katrina, I might not be able to open these things. |

The tech who I got to transfer everything from the old machine to this one said "That is a beautiful machine!" but it sometimes goes way too fast for me, and even occasionally does things I hadn't told it to. Anyway, do any of our resident experts have any advice for me? Olwyn Mary in New Orleans |

Olwyn Mary in New Orleans I use Google docs and am happy with it. All the standard types can be created: documents, spreadsheets, etc. I haven't had a problem opening Word documents. Your documents are maintained in the cloud - not on your computer, unless you choose to download. |

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report. If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall. And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang. When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom! If you have a Mac I can send you Microsoft Word, Excel and Power
Point, if not I think I may still have Microsoft Office if you want to install it on your new machine. |

I have now downloaded and installed Open Office on this computer, and will await the arrival of this month's various newsletters to see how it works. Olwyn Mary in New Orleans |
