Do any of you get Sandra magazine? My local newsagents have been getting it
in for me for years, but the Jan 2007issue never arrived and when they
queried it with their supplier (John Menzies) , no-one knew what happened to
it or when the next issue is due. Has anyone got their copy, or has it gone
out of production?

I used to get Sandra in subscription from GLP. also Verena and Anna,
both in German. Also Border's used to sell them but ceases for some
unknown reason.
When I go home to Germany, I always return with stacks of the "little"
knitting magazines, the ones you can buy at the supermarket. I am
always amazed at the number of patterns available in those magazines,
which makes me resentful and unwilling to pay twenty bucks or more for
designer books with half the number of patterns to knit.
Gratefully, I now receive emails from Berocco, Patons and Bernat with
free patterns in them, more than I could ever knit in my life.
On the needle: a purse to be felted as a Mystery Skein Exchange
project.
On the wheel: just completed the turquoise green Cormo roving. Plyed
it to a nice, thick, worsted yarn which will probably turn into
something to wear.
The wind is howling around the house and the trees are creaking in
protest. The ice covering them melted away on Wednesday, thank
Goodness. I worry about my family near the North Sea. The pictures
from Germany and Holland do look frightning.
Blessings to all,

I agree about the value of some of the knitting magazines around, so many
have tons of adverts and just a few patterns, and cost a lot IMO. Sandra
however, gives a lot of patterns for a bargain price, and no adverts!

Ah propos adverts i cut out most pages that have adverts on both sizes
, leaving only a small stripe of the page ,, this saves space from
where i keep it ,,, most mags have 4-8 adverts only pages ,,,, cut
that out and you have space for 1 more real patterns mag.

I must admit that now I buy those English magazines at Border's, Simply
Knitting and another one. Both are under eight bucks and just chuck
full of knitting -related stuff.
But I did keep all Verena's and most Sandra's.
Like you, Mirjam, I layed in a supply of sock knitting needles in all
lengths but bemoaned the fact that I had to make due with 4 needles
instead of five.
However, I do not fuss about having to use a size 4 needle with my size
3 set. It truly does not make a difference, especially with socks.
After two washings, the stitches will have all settled down and be as
even as can be. To prove that to yourself, you can look at ancient
knitting in museums. The stitches look as if they had been done by
machine. And we know those ancient knitters did not have needles as
finely differentiated as we do. So I don't worry too much.
Did you notice that the European mags now feature patterns that look
suspiciously like the 70s? Glad I kept all those old Sandras and
Verenas.
On the needle: still the purse to be felted. Also received my order
from Catnip Yarns catnipyarns.com
It took all of 2 days between order and delivery. I bought a large
hank of Alpaca 2-ply, light and dark brown, Also received some samples
from their other offerings and will order again. Such yummy stuff.
I am knitting a watch cap with the Alpaca, for Uncle george who at 82
still goes out to tend the cows. The pattern is one of those freebies.
Time to go. The sun has risen brilliantly and no snow is falling. But
it is bitterly cold.
Knitterly greeting from upstate New York,
