Jenn when you are in a stressful situation like this, it is very hard
to keep what doctor said what straight. When my husband was dying we
tried to have three of us there at a time when we were spoken to, it
was the only way we could sort out what was said, by whom, and what to
do/think about it.

There are things you want to hear, things you don't want to hear and
selectivity plays into it and complicates everything. Your brain
keeps turning all that was said, and all that you thought was said,
over and over. There is no easy route when you are pushed to the
limit. Keep your chin up and good luck.

Oh Sheena, every time you talk about this my heart breaks a bit more. When are
you coming here so I can wait on you? Gee wiz, woman. You sure have been
through it.

Geez, I didn't realize I was THAT out of it. Now out of a less
stressed, a little less sleep deprived sister, here's the clearer
version of what's happened:

Saturday night: I left about 6:30 pm. Mom's okay, no coughing or
noticable wheezing. I return at about 7:30 pm and she is coughing
again. By 8:00 she said that she has to do something and starts
walking around in hopes of going outside in the fresh air. I suggest
a walk around the hallway. We make it about 3/4 around the loop of
that section of the hospital, where I smell cleaning chemicals.
Something as strong as Spic 'n Span, but not the same smell. I
mention this to Mom. We finish the loop and back into her room. By
8:30 pm she's calling in the Respritory Therapist. The RT comes in
(English is a second language to him) and starts telling her that she
had a treatment less than 2 hours ago and doesn't believe that she
could need another one as Mom is hacking and wheezing. He tries to
take an oxygen reading from her finger and another test. He says that
she hasn't changed all day and the medicine must not be working. Keep
in mind that her highest (read between treatments) was up 25% at 6:00
pm and was half that at 8:30 pm even with at treatment inbetweeen.
The RT is taking his time telling her that he thinks the medicine is
not working and needs to call the MD before administering the
prescribed medicine. This is after the RT from the night before
literally changed the prescription back to "protocol" and the MD had
to write another prescription back to the original. Eventually Mom
demanded the Nursing Supervisor and by that time I was in need of
asthma medication from the chemicals so I got some fresh air. I went
outside and when I came back the supervisor was about finished talking
to Mom and Dad. The RT came back later trying to apologize, to which
I wasn't hearing a difference in what was said before the treatment
and after the supervisor was brought in.

Sunday: I got there about 8:30 am. Mom went for a shower and the
cleaning lady comes in. I tell her that Mom cannot have any cleaning
chemicals because she had a bad reaction. The cleaning lady made a
note in her little note pad not to clean. She did take out the
garbage and give Mom more towels. At about 11:00 the MD came in and
said she heard of the chemical reaction from the night before and gave
the overview of what her status was. 11:30 the pulmonologist came in
saying there was nothing to be alarmed about with either the sinus or
chest CT. He said based on the radiologist's report, there is an
infection, but since he did not see the results himself he couldn't
determine if it was an old or a new infection. He didn't have the
results of the blood tests, which would come in on Monday.

Mom slept most of the time from when I got there to about 3:00 when I
left, other than when the staff woke her up.

Monday: She's home!

Isn't this just like families and medical confusion. Hoping all the news
stays positive, and your mom is home, and well, soon. Hugs around,

Yeah, I saw it after posting... for once I read mail from the fun names before
the public name.

By the way, kids and I stopped by tonight. She is definitely doing better -
enough so she thought she could handle weeding the garden, got about a 4ft by
2ft section yanked and then realized she needed her emergency inhaler.
shaking head Still on high doses of prednisone which makes her
short-tempered and irritable and frankly no fun to be around unless you're 6.
Missy did get some good cuddle and read time with her before things got
difficult, so I'm hoping that now she'll sleep okay (no more night terrrors
please!!!)
