Default software program for converting photos to XS

In your experience, what software programs are out there for converting photos
to XS? I like complicated XS with lots of color for shading. What pros and
cons should I look for in a program? I have a PC with 120G Harddrive, so space
is no problem. What programs should I stay away from and why? Thanks for any
input you can give me.

The software I use and like very much is Pattern Maker Pro V 4.4. It
essentially gives you a chart in pixels, and they are fun to stitch with lots
of colors. I have stitches three so far, and there are around 90 colors in
each. You can get Pattern Maker from Hobbyware.com
