Default Fair Isle question

Hi all!
In a moment of insanity last night, I started my first fair isle
sweater and I am wondering what to do with the colours if I am not
using them on a row.
The sweater is a Philosopher's Wool kit with 9(!) different colours.
I've done a few of inches of the first sleeve and I carried all the
strands of yarn up, which makes for an extremely bulky line going up
the sleeve. I think I am going to frog what I have done so far and
restart, but I just need some advice on how I should proceed.

Should I weave the yarn in and out every time it is used or carry them
up if they are used within a set number of rows? for example, some
colours are used for one row and then, 6 rows later, it is used again
for only one row. What to do?!

TIA
Joycelyn

Hi, Joyce, I find weaving in such a pain that I think I'd do something
like move the ball of unused yarn in or out of the knitting at the
beginning (or end, ha ha) of each round...sort of passing the yarn back
and forth "across" the rows so as to weave them in but leave them
attached. That might not work for flat knitting, though. If it's a
color used in just one row and then one more row six rows later, though,
I think I'd break it & weave in the ends.

Hi Joycelyn,

I, personally, carry the yarn up (making sure that they do not pull tight).
Then when I sew up the "bulky" seam I catch the strands down while seaming.
Now here comes the MAGIC TIP....
I turn the finished, sewn up garment inside out with the seam "running" down
the middle of the section (as thought you were going to pleat a seam in a
pair of trousers/pants - not with the seam on the edge of the section) and
STEAM the seams "flat"!!
As you may know - steaming "thins" out the fabric - Hey Presto! Seam is not
so bulky.
