Default dutch spiral? AND my FIRST beaded ornament

Hi all,

After a busy weekend, I got to play with beads a little, and I found
these instructions on the net for a dutch spiral. I thought I would try it,
but I'm not sure this is rignt:

http://www.beadbimbo.com/ebay/ds.jpg

Isn't it suppose to have sort of a ruffly look? I think I'm doing
something wrong, although I like the look of the top one.

I'm glad I'm not getting a report card on beading. It would say,
"Beadbimbo doesn't follow instructions well." I think I may be forever
doomed to classes where someone actually *shows me* how to do something.

On the other hand, I did try a beaded ornament, even though I had some
size 8 and 6 beads. I want to try it again with some 11s. This is just a
simple one. (THANKS JoAnn!) I could only follow the pattern up to a point
because my beads
would have been dangling WAY down below the ornament. I sort of improvised
and made it shorter. I think it's kind of klunky looking, but I think I'd
really like it with smaller beads.

Have you looked at these instructions?
http://beadwork.about.com/library/weekly/aa081897.htm
Look for the "peyote spiral" near the bottom.

And these?
http://beadwork.about.com/library/weekly/aa021698.htm

I like the bracelet shown here but I think the instructions have a mistake
in step 2:

And I'm thinking about trying this one soon:

Your Ornament isn't klunky at all. I like it. I think it looks very nice.

First -- You haven't really done enough of it yet. So it's hard to tell. Do
more and see.

They're not so much "ruffly" as they are a swirling texture. Keep beading it
and see how it looks. With beadweaving, often you can't really tell what it's
eventually going to look like til you've got more of it done.

Hard to say, Jerri. You need to do more of the spiral if it's not
obvious at first. The pattern will begin to show the more you do and
it won't necessarily be a ruffle.

You are really adventurous! I think your ornament cover does look a
little clunky but very cool.

Thanks Marissa! I'm hoping it's simple enough that my daughter can make
one. She might not like using the size 11 beads though, so if she wanted to
do one like this one, it'd be easier.

Thanks Diana. I think the only written instructions I do well with are the
ones in the WAJ magazine because they have so many pictures. It's almost
like having someone there with you.
