This past weekend, I went to a second hand shop. I'd been there before,
picked up a couple Avon pieces for somewhere between 50 cents and a dollar
for both. I did some research and found out they're worth maybe 20 or 30
dollars apiece.

So when I went back, I asked about more Avon jewelry. Seemed like an
interesting thing to do. The lady was about to lock up and leave early when
I drove up. I looked at a few pieces, and then she pulls out this jewelry
box she'd been given with all sorts of Avon pieces in it. I asked her how
much for the whole box and she said 8 bucks!

Most of the stuff is about 30 years old. But it gets better...

Some of the things in this box are Masonic in origin. I've got a bracelet
from the Order of the Eastern Star, some past matron pins (most were from
1976), International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and even a Ladies
Oriental Shrine pin!

At the very bottom of the box were some rose quarts beads (all round) and
some mother of pear chips from a necklace that had broken.

Gee, I don't know what to do with this treasure... yet!

Oh, how cool!! Sounds like some great stuff.

And reading that brought back memories. My grandmother, who died in 1976,
was a member of the Easter Star. Somewhere here, I have a ribbon bookmark
she gave me that has Eastern Star stamped on it.

Hmm, I have been raiding my old jewellery boxes and have found that the
*good* Vendome and 1928 jewellery and also the Sarah Coventry ones are
still in A-1 shape and I plan to break them up and use the bits.

But may I suggest, as the wife of a Mason, that if no one in your family
is involved in the Eastern Star or Shriners (which I'm not, by the way),
that you could contact them and they would most likely be quite happy to
get it back. I know the Masons are when they receive pins and other
regalia back because they are then reused. Just my 2 Canadian cents
worth, grin.

I am OES. Even still, I will probably look into a local museum. If there
isn't one around, I will contact a Masonic museum in El Paso, where I used
to work. I am certain they will be more than happy to have these things.
They have a lot of valuable Masonic artifacts, but most are men's groups,
not OES, and not IORG, and this is the first LOS pin I have ever seen.

What a great idea! I hate to hear about things like that getting tossed
out. I hadn't even thought of a museum. It's nice to know they can go back
to where they'll be appreciated!

What an excellent idea. These definitely are older pins and bracelets
and I am sure the OES, etc. would love to have them for display. I
know, after 46 years of marriage to a Mason, that his Lodge is very
appreciative of getting the apron and pin back. That LOS pin is the
first time I have heard of one.

Your Museum would probably love the two Encyclopaedias of Freemasonry I
have here that are written in 1893 by Mackie. They are a goldmine of
information for my other passion.....genealogy. I do get asked a lot of
questions when people have old documents and jewellery belonging to
their Masonic ancestors.

Cheers.....Heather (Canada)

ROFL!! I do believe I see 2 blue moons in the sky. Not on your life,
sweet cheeks. I am still finding old GOOD jewellery that I will be
taking apart. And I did sell Avon jewellery *mumble* years ago and
found some of that too. As good as the day I bought it.

Cheers....Heather 8-))
