Cutting A Glass Headlight?
For a science project I need to remove the front circumference
from a glass automobile headlight. I tried using a manual glass cutter but could not get it to scribe. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. |

Even though you can score the glass, you need to be able to reach the underneath the score in order to achieve a breakout. (Notwithstanding the scenes in the movies where the jewel thief scores a hole in a plate glass window and pulls the circle out with a suction cup whilst dangling upside down in a laser filled vault....it can't be done.) |

I think your best bet is to score around the outer edge (not the front!)
of the headlight, then try to force a stress fracture with heat. Try making the score and then touching a red-hot wire to the edge... it has to be done within a few minutes of making the score. If it works, you may be able to tap the edge of the headlamp with a hard instrument and have the front come off intact. Good luck! I've never tried this, so take everything I said as speculation. Spray rim with liquid nitrogen? May actually work, and will look even more photogenic. |
