Yes, that's what I figured too, thank you!

I worked out how many inches of fabric I need (78) and I know (from

If I order 2,5 yds. I should be on the safe side. I only know that a
yard is a little bit less than a meter - about 92 cm? My dictionary only
gives inch in cm, etc. but not how many inch in a foot, or how many inch
in a yard. And I finally want to KNOW stuff like that and not just
'guestimate'.

Please help!

A yard is *36"*, and I believe a meter is approximately 39". So two
meters would be just under 2.25 yards -- I'd go with 2.5 yards to be on
the safe side. You never know how much something will shrink, after all.

Actually: I just mailordered 2,5 yards from the fabric I think I will
use and 3 yards of a fabric I like better but am not really certain
(from the tiny bit I have and seeing it on the screen) if it would work
as well..... How is that for stash building ;-)

Roberta Zollner schrieb:

Yard = 36", meter = 39". So 2.5 yards is OK. But IMO just buy 3 yards -if
you don't use it, you have more stash. And if you do need it, (even the most
experienced quilters have brain fog days and cut out the wrong sizes) you'll
be really annoyed if you didn't buy more!

Thank you, I've already worked it out: 36 inch is 1 yard, 39 inch is 1
meter. Thank you for the link, I've alread added it to my tools file
too.

Uschi
don't you just love it, when help and knowledge is just an e-mail away!

No, don't!

A yard is really 36 inches (or three feet), not 39.

Here's a page to help with conversions.

THANK YOU! As I will mailorder, I'll go with the 2,5 yds. And I'll save
your reply in my "Quilt-File" so I can check back, should I forget the
measures again!

Uschi
(so a yard is 3 feet and 3 inches?)

A yard is 39 inches. A foot is 12 inches. When I buy fabric I always buy
to the next quarter meter. So you could go with 2.25 meters. But I tend
to use the half meter because I would always rather be safe than sorry.
Especially if it is some place I know I won't be able to return to shop
for a bit.

There was a little rhyme we learned at school, can't remember it all but
the pertinent bit goes

"A metre equals 3 foot 3 - its longer than a yard you see..."

You can also use google - just type what you'd like right in the search
term box (like "3 yards in meters") and it calculates it for you.

Uschi, I have to laugh because I was so totally metric until I became a
quilter. Now I have to work to think in metric. Anything up to 12 inches
long I work in inches, over that I switch back to metres!!

When I started to quilt in 1986 there was nothing available her in
Austria. I ordered everything in the US and so got used to think in
inch. I have all my tools in inches and when quilting took off in
Austria and rulers were available in cm I refused to buy everything a
second time.

I know how many cm are an inch and can look up any other conversion from
inch/foot/yard to meter. What was missing for me was the "division
within". Thanks to all of you, I've not got it noted down.

Uschi
still smiling when I think back to my first time buying fabric in Canada
and asking for a yard "We only sell in meters!" OOOOKKKAAAYYY - I can
deal with that... :-)
