Default yarn substitutes ?

hi,

I've got a few old Columbia-Minerva and Bear Brand books (from 50's and
60's) with
baby/toddler items that I want to use to make items for Charity and
friends..but of course,
the problem is the yarn.. figured out the actual baby yarns but there is one
yarn,
Nantuk bulky, does anyone know substitute for this one? would it be a
current
chunky or bulky? the pattern calls for 10 1/2 needles. if not, here come
the swatches!

Donna, is the gauge in plain knitting 3 1/2 sts to the inch? If so, then
bulky yarn is correct. The one to comes to mind is Reynolds Lopi, but I am
sure there are acrylic yarns which would meet the same stitch gauge.

It is in stockinette..I will experiment, have plenty of yarn and time to do
so,
especially time sine the modelstitchng I'm doing has hit a snag and have
to wait for further instructions on it!

Did you get a response to the type of yarn that can be substituted? I have
a Leisure Arts Pattern that calls for Nantuk and I am trying Lion Brand
Jiffy, but that seems to be too large a gauge. I wasn't too concerned
because I want the sweater to be a size six and the pattern goes only to
size four. Have to add inches for length, but not for width apparently.
