The disappearance of bees is due to Colony Collapse Disorder - we have
it in the UK too.

I signed a petition the other day urging our government to support
research into this, and had it explained to me. I hadn't heard of it
before. Very important - no bees = no pollination = no crops = no food.

Well, sort of. "Colony Collapse Disorder" is just another way of saying
"All the bees are vanishing and we don't know why". So it doesn't really
make much sense to say "The disappearance of bees is due to Colony
Collapse Disorder" because all you're saying is "The disappearance of
bees is due to all the bees are vanishing and we don't know why"

We don't know if we've got it in the UK or not. Some bees are vanishing,
but some bees always do this. CCD means lots of bees vanishing and so
far lots of bees are not vanishing all over the UK, although in some
areas they are. Is it CCD? Is is just normal bee vanishment? It's too
early to say.

Youre quite right that beekeeping and bee research needs much more money
from central government. Beekeeping is not just a rather eccentric hobby
and a way of getting honey for your toast. Frankly we can live without
honey. Jam is also nice on toast. But we can't live without bees, as you
say.

Mel Rimmer, beekeeper.
