Question: Downsizing Childs pattern
I am making a dress for my daughter who is a size 3 from a pattern in which
the smallest size is 7. I traced the pattern and played with it until it looked right, then made a muslin. I did pretty good on the bodice and am now going to start on the skirt then continue with a long sleeve jacket. I am wondering if anyone knows of a web site with general rules for this type of work. The many searches I did didn't turn up very much. Is there a rule like "1 inch smaller for each size"? (or something like that) Anything you know about this would be great help! Thanks! |

I have a book "Make your own Patterns" by Rene Bergh - ISBN 1-85368-544-5 Although it doesn't have details on downsizing for children it does touch on scaling adult patterns. The simplest solution I've found is a 16 page instruction booklet on
grading patterns from Amazon Drygoods. It covers not only grading, but the slash and spread method of pattern modification. Illustrated with line drawing of basic pattern pieces, it is sort of a "Readers' Digest Condensed Version" of pattern grading. I've forgotten the actual cost, but the info has been priceless! You may email them at or phone 1 800 798 7979. |

Thanks Everybody for your suggestions! I think that is the same book I saw
a review on at http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/index.pl and I was finally able to find a web site with the slash and spread method at http://www.sensibility.com/pattern/resizepattern.htm I am almost finished the dress, it looks great so far and fits very well. My daughter was very co-operative (big surprise) and loves to twirl in her "princess dress" Thanks again!!!!!!!
