Default Knitting Boards

Oh my gosh! I'm not a knitter as it hurts my fingers too much (diabetic and
pricks fingers several times per day) but my mom brought a friend over last
night to show me some scarfs she had made using a knitting board her husband
had made for her and I was astounded. It's sort of like one of those round
knitting looms they sell at Michaels but it's long instead of round and the
work goes so fast I was amazed. I watched her wrap the yarn around these nails
that were placed about an inch apart and then pull the bottom loop over the top
loop and it was just amazing how fast she made a gorgeous scarf! My husband
has promised to make me one but, in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone
else had ever used one and what they thought of them.

You know, ever since qvc had a knitting board on I have been totally
curious about these. I would love to hear about them. When they
showed them, they did not have many patterns to use with them so I did
not buy it. Are the patterns out there ? It was very pretty and made
of maple.

I'll defer to everybody else more experienced (ahem, Mirjam! ), but this
sounds similar to the concept of finger knitting. you weave two rows of
yarn in and out of your fingers and then you take the bottom loop and pull
it over your finger. To create the next row of stitches, you weave the yarn
in and out of your fingers again, only now what was originally the second
row becomes the first row and pulled over the finger as the last time. You
can obviously only work on four fingers at once, in this case, so the board
sounds much more convenient in this case! LOL

It is amazing, isn't it? I saw one in action last summer in QUebec, and our
own Mirjam knows all about them. My DH was going to make me one, but somehow
it got forgotten. I'll have to remind him. g

Not sure what's going on here but AOL is STILL missing a lot of posts!
Went to Google to see if anyone had answered my original post and see
several replies!! Mirjam, thank you so much for the offer but I just
this moment got my pattern and hubby is at the hardware store as we
speak, ha ha! Ghislaine, the woman who gave it to me is from Canada
and, apparently, they are used a lot over there. I'm so excited to get
started on mine. She used a crochet hook to pull the loops over but it
seemed just as easy to use my fingers. And I love the idea of using
fingers only without the board....... hmmmmmmmm..... going to have to
give that a try. And also, Mirjam, I HAVE seen the circular ones at
the craft stores lately. They make sort of a tube-scarf. Thank you
all so much for the replies.

Lindy got a new project, YIPPEE!
