Gunky iron
I was pressing on some Daisy Scout patches today, and grabbed a bit of handy
fabric to use as a press cloth. Ooops! The iron had some gunk on it and it transfered to this lovely yellow sun fabric I have! So, 2 questions. How do I clean the gunk off my iron, using only things I have in the house - I don't want to run out for Iron Off (or 100grit sandpaper as someone suggested)? And, any thing I can do to get the gunk out of the fabric, without using scissors?? -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm un-STUFF email address to reply |

Here are some tips from one of my sewing lists:
My mother used to put table salt (lots of it) on wax paper and then would iron it until the residue would come off the bottom of the iron. Put a chunk of paraffin in a sock and fold it over, about a half a block. When my iron gets draggy I run it across the sock, then rub it on a scrap that has some rough to it. Like terry cloth, denim or even the other sock. LizA. Kent, WA |

Ack, NOT 100 grit, 1000 grit! Wet dry, the type they use on
automobiles. 100 grit would take the iron right down to the wires. Diana frood wrote: I was pressing on some Daisy Scout patches today, and grabbed a bit of handy fabric to use as a press cloth. Wendy:
What is the sole of the iron? If it is plain metal, you can probably use a fine grade steel wool to polish it up. (Workshop quality, not Brillo Soap pads.) I would do that before and/or after with the salt and/or the paraffin block treatments, as suggested by Liz. The fabric is probably ruined. Whatever. ;-) I'm still not leaving the house to get some.

I recently ironed over paint on fabric, yeah, yeah, I know... Anyways, I
cleaned it with the alcohol swabs of DH's. The iron plate is metal. Worked fine, left no trace on the plate. As for the gunk on the fabric, I have no clue. Sorry. Toni |

If the alcohol took the gunk off the iron, it might be worth a try to
try it on the fabric too. Julia in MN -- This message has been scanned for viruses by Norton Anti-Virus http://webpages.charter.net/jaccola/ |

Sometimes its possible after the fabric has cooled to scrape with a knife
side ways (not too sharp) to get gunk off! Estelle uk "frood" wrote in message . com... I was pressing on some Daisy Scout patches today, and grabbed a bit of handy fabric to use as a press cloth. I have 'Sticky Stuff Remover' - a similar US product might work.
For the UKers, mine was from a Lakeland Shop. I also have their iron cleaner (a tube for about £5, but lasts and more to the point, actually works. I've recently bought their cleaner for the white sealer round the shower which actually made it look brand new again, and also the oven base liner - boiled over lasagne just lifted off when cold. Isn't it satisfying when you buy a product that 'promises' and it actually works. No affiliation - just glad that Lakeland shops seem to be appearing everywhere. -- Sally at the Seaside~~~~~~~ http://community.webshots.com/user/sallyswin On Thu, 20 Oct 2005 11:12:17 +0000 (UTC), "Estelle Gallagher" wrote: Sometimes its possible after the fabric has cooled to scrape with a knife side ways (not too sharp) to get gunk off! You've probably done it already, but my mom uses vinegar and water to clean her
iron. Lorraine "frood" wrote in message . com... I was pressing on some Daisy Scout patches today, and grabbed a bit of handy fabric to use as a press cloth. Ooops!
