"SlinkyToy" wrote in message ... Depends on the effect you want. If I want to spin yarn that is consistently colored throughout the batch, I dye the wool, blend together the different dyelots on a carder, then spin the yarn. If I want slight shade variations in the finished product, I spin first and dye second. Or maybe I want to make space-dyed variegated yarn, or try my hand at reproducing the patterning that's so popular right now in commercial sock yarn - all of these things are better achieved by dyeing the yarn and not the fiber. Well, thanks Cori for asking, and thanks Slinky for answering! I was wondering the same thing. OK, Slinky, can I dye the fleece roving Els sent me?? Thanks everyone, but here's another Q: won't it FELT the wool using a microwave? One needs three things to felt wool: Change of temp, chain of akalinity (soap or vinegar will provide this) and agitation (washing machine or beating it on the counter top). The Kool-Aid dyeing only has two....one doesn't agitate the yarn at all. Gently stiring and gently squeezing won't felt it. |

Hugs, Cori Cori that is totally up to you. What do you want to do with the fibers and yarns. What is your end project...going to be. Go play with some sample skeins. Dye fibers first than spin, use multi colours and spin, make some skeins and dye them etc etc. Go from there. Above all have fun while you are at it Els -- I have added a trap for spammers......niet..... |
