Default Knit stitch in Monica's book

I hope someone can help me. I'm looking for a knit stitch that I saw in one of
Monica Ferris' needlework mystery books. I started a scarf for my daughter
using this stitch on a small part of it and I'm ready for it again on the other
end of the scarf and can't for the life of me remember how to do it. I'm a
cross stitcher, not a knitter so I 'm a little lost. I gave my books to my
grandmother to read so don't have them for a referency any longer. I think
Betsy was the one making the scarf. Thanks to anyone with a better memory than
mine!
Robin
