So sorry to hear this, Kate.
I hope your DH isn't going to try to be too 'manly' about this.
The bowel obstruction might have caused her a lot of extra discomfort
and undignified intervention, so it is good for her to have missed this.
It will be good for your FIL to have you all there to rally round.
