Economics - Drawing wire or buying it?
Hello. I am brand new to this forum and this is my first post.
I am getting ready to start my own jewelry-making business and wonder if it is cheaper / better to draw my own silver wire or to buy it. This will be a very small operation at first with one - two employees. If it makes more sense to buy the wire, then suggestions as to good suppliers would also be appreciated. Many thanks and I look forward to learning from you all ! Rick. |

Buying the wire means you pay someone else to do it, but they may be more efficient at it, and chances are the quality of the wire you buy may be better than what you'll make from your own ingots. It's useful to be able to draw down existing wire when you need smaller sizes, but making all your own if you don't use large quantities, may not make sense. You have to work out your own economics though. Figure out how much time it takes you/your employees, and what the end cost of making your own is. Compare that to buying it. You'll have your answer. This will be a very small operation at first with one - two employees. Chuckle. Very small is just you, in a corner of your basement. Actual employees is a step above very small... If it makes more sense to buy the wire, then suggestions as to good suppliers would also be appreciated. Many thanks and I look forward to learning from you all ! Rick. |

Many thanks and I look forward to learning from you all ! I've been a bench jeweler for 30+ years and have never bought wire. Well, actually I did buy some 5mm thick (I don't do gauges, sorry) sterling wire once for some project, but mostly I draw my own. I wish I had room for a draw table! I do it all by hand. Now that I'm heavy, I considered placing my drawplate in the steel rafters of the store I rent and jumping off a step ladder with the drawtongs in my hands overhead... Rick. |

I have been waiting for about 5 days now but the shipping times are 10-19 days. As soon as I get them I will let you know. I have not seen you on that forum for a long time now and I was wondering where you are? How did it go with the collection that you got? Here is the link to the beads again http://www.liangdianup.com/beadscrafts_1.htm and here is the link to the Swarovski beads http://www.liangdianup.com/inventory/900020.htm if those links don't work then you can goto www.lducompany.com and click on the beads picture, that should take you right there. I hope you see this message and get back to me cause I miss talking to you
