Default afghan square

I'm doing a knitted square like you described. It's the center panel
for a shawl. Two stitches is a good start. As for when you decrease,
that depends on how big you want it to be. The center panel for my
shawl is done in garter stitch and doesn't start till I have 116 sts.
The pattern is k1,yo, k to end. This means I knit 114 rows before I
start decreasing. Good luck on your square.

started from a corner and increased to a certain size and then decreased to
make the last corner.

Lynne,
If you buy a ball of Bernat cotton, there should be a dishcloth pattern on
it that will answer your question. I have used that pattern to make
dishcloths and baby blankets. Very easy to do.

You start decreasing when the sides are the required length. What makes
it square is how many increases you incorporate in each row. With single
crochet, two stitches per row, starting from a first row of two
stitches, should give you the right angle.

I posted a pattern for a dishcloth not too long ago that consists of 100 rows
and you're working on the bias rather than straight rows. Start with one
stitch. Do 1 increase at the beginning of each row (until you have 50 on your
needle) then start decreasing at the beginning of each row until you have 1
left. Then end off.
