Thanks, but I don't think that will be necessary, because I've gotten
several pointers to online sources to what is probably the same fabric.

I am amazed by the quick responses to my question about steam engine
fabric. My friend's son owns an antique steam engine such as was used in
the early 1900's for agricultural purposes, such as powering threshing
machines. The fabric you found seemed to be more trains, but I think it
would please her, and I plan to order some for her.

Now I am wondering how you found it so quickly? A quick search in google
didn't do it for me. Is there a general fabric search web site? Or do
you have favorite online fabric stores that you turn to? Or had you
just happened to see this fabric before?

There are a few search resources, of varying applicability depending
on whether you're looking for new or old fabric...

http://www.fabshophop.com/ (follow the FabSearch link. Search
participating shop inventories, web-search shop sites, or post request
to 900+ shops.)

http://www.missingfabrics.com/ (post request for many quilters & shops
to view on web site.)

http://www.fabrics.net/ (Similar to missingfabrics, but replies from
shops only (unless I'm mistaken.))

http://froogle.google.com/ (worth a shot if you can't find it
elsewhere. Not a fabric-only search by a long shot, so you may have to
play with your search terms. By default only shows one item per shop
in results, but includes "See all results from..." links to see more.)

I was at a quilting retreat the last 2 days and one of the women asked
the rest of us to keep our eyes open for fabric with steam engines on
it. Have any of you ever seen anything like that? I do plan to do some
Internet searching when I have a little more time, but thought someone
might have seen some and could save me some time.

By the way, I had a good time, as always, at the retreat. We have a new
building for our retreat in this year, with more room, good lighting,
and big windows overlooking a gorgeous view of the hills in SE MN. Also
nice sleeping rooms in the same building. I'm almost done with the paper
pieced autumn leaves wall quilt that I started last month in our guild's
workshop with Carol Doak. All I have left is the borders.
