Default Road Trip - Requesting Help (Somewhat OT)

Hello!

If you were to drive cross country (US), where would you go? What would
you see? It is a quick trip (5-6 days) but we would like to make a few
stops.

Favorite quilting museums?
Favorite landmarks or parks?

We are unlikely to take the southern route, but we could go across the
middle or the north. (I've done the southern route, and in the summer -
too hot!)

Thanks!

A great question, Natalie. I am eager to read the responses. My top
favorites would be the Smokey Mountains and the Grand Canyon but they may be
both in what you would call the south. Five to six days is mighty fast, can
you add to it just a few days? weeks? just a little more? Polly

Write down what your passions are. We like museums, historical sites,
scenic drives, hot springs, and festivals. Choose the states you want to
see, then do a seearch for what's special to that state. Say New Mexico,
where you can find lots of interesting Native American pueblos, festivals,
museums, history of extremely old human existance, and try hot springs
clothing optional, then have fabulous NM food with red or green chili. We
also sport SW fabrics. Come see me!

Hit your local library for Frommers, Fodor's, Lonely Planet books and maybe
that will help you narrow down your list.
5 or 6 days will not be enough time to go from one ocean to the other with
sanity intact. Make time to shop, girl!

I don't think doing that drive in that short a time gives you much time to
stop and see much. But going northern route, the national parks are a
must..... Crater Lake, Craters of the Moon, Yellowstone, Glacier, Mt
Rushmore....

We have at most 8 days (Wednesday to Wednesday). I am not doing all the
driving alone, so we should be able to make pretty good time.

(And just to clarify, the point of the trip is not to sightsee.)
Its purpose, however, is two fold, one, to move an apartments worth of
stuff from one ocean to the other and two, to spend time with my new SIL
and get to know each other.

But we thought it would be nice to make one or two quick stops along the
way. But we need to decide which way...

Looking forward to hearing about everyone's favorite places!

Thanks Mary! SIL had said today that she wanted to see Mt. Rushmore. I
think I'd like to see Crater Lake.

This is going to be fun!

Come up through Canada! DIelds of wheat (or canola or whatever they are
growing this year) as far as the eye can see, some mountains (I'm told they
are there, never saw any the whole time I was in Alberta) and think of the
educational value! How often do you get to see a "mad cow"? or a "mad
chicken"? a cannibal pig? and the snow keeps the bugs and the air
conditioning costs down...;-)
Gas is more expensive though. Here on the island (Newfoundland that is) it's
currently 91.3c/L. Ok let's see...roughly 4L in a gallon, so that's what,
$3.60 a gallon? for regular? Yeah, maybe you are better off cutting through
the states...

If you get as far south as St. Louis, the Gateway Arch is spectacular -- the
museum underground has terrific exhibits dealing with the westward expansion
and the view from the top of the arch is pretty incredible too. Since you've
mentioned Mount Rushmore (I agree it is worth the visit) on your way by
Mitchell, South Dakota take a visit by the Corn Palace (don't bother to go
in - inside is a waste of money, but the outside is pretty cool). The Wall,
South Dakota Drugstore is a must-see if you want to buy tourist junk (It is
advertised for miles and miles in that area of the country). Now when you
are in Montana, if you get off the interstate and do the backroads (and I
can't remember what road I am thinking about) in Judith Gap, Montana there
is a little roadside farmers' supply (seed and fertilizer etc) that has
GREAT milkshakes (I had a fresh wild cherry shake).

Have fun!

The Grand Canyon is a good choice for sure. If you come through Iowa, there
are the Amana Colonies (with some outstanding restaurants, although not
exactly what you'd call healthy eating! But they do have a LQS!) and Kalona,
a Mennonite community with several quilts shops. Neither are terribly far
off I-80. If you're come through on a Saturday or Sunday, let me know, and
I'll come down to meet you!
