Default Prongs..Question

I am trying to describe the condition of a broken mounting for a
diamond. I know the item is referred to as prongs, but was wondering
if the pin or post that is attached to the shank has a separate name
(such as pin or post).

Can anybody help?

Thanks

If you are referring to a type of prong setting where the cluster of prongs join
together at the bottom, into a pin or post that is then soldered into a hole in
the shank of the ring, that pin/post is usually called a peg, and the prong
setting assembly as a whole is called a pegged head. The heads are available
either with the pegs or without. Properly installed, by the way, the solder
should flow up a bit past just the peg, so the bases of the prongs themselves
are also soldered to the shank. If it's just the peg that's soldered, the heads
are too easy to twist or bend or break off. But when there is a problem with a
prong, these heads are easy for a decent goldsmith to replace, by unsoldering
the existing head (the whole thing), and simply soldering on a new one and
resetting the stone.
