Default OT buying a radio

This might not be OT. Many of us think good music is as important to
quilting as good needles and thread. Our last fine old radio went out the
door yesterday with our daughter who has the Katrina damage. She says they
were badly suffering from Merle Haggard Withdrawal Syndrome.
Other than Bose - and I just don't think I need an exquisite radio like
that - have any of you a recommendation for a radio? It's been a very long
time since I bought a radio, well not since our children who are now
grandparents wanted boom boxes. I'm pretty much clueless about who makes a
decent one. Any thoughts? Polly (in a very quiet sewing room)

Oh, Polly, if you really like good quality music, then I would advise you
NOT to listen to a Bose. Nothing else compares. The should is so pure and
clear.

That might not matter to a lot of people, but it matters much to me.

Mmmmm, yes. We have the Boses here. I was just thinking that over the hum
of the Bernina and the yipping Yorkie that something else could do well
enough. Polly

I can't help with your radio, but I will say that I'm salivating at the
idea of an iPod. G I'd love to have one of those new nanos. sigh

Polly, if you're thinking "Bose" quality, but not Bose prices, Consumer
Reports did a report awhile back & they compared Cambridge Soundworks to
Bose, without the pricetag of Bose. We've been looking at Bose & we're
going to check out Cambridge to see if they really are comparible.

DH just bought an iPod & I told him I was going to call myself the iPod
widow if he didn't give it a rest. He downloaded all our CD's to it & has
now downloaded a bunch of music from iTunes & the next purchase is going to
be either a Bose or Cambridge Soundworks radio that we can hook the iPod up
to. He bought some little speakers from Amazon for the iPod for about $20 -
I think they are JBL's. We saw the same thing in the store for $99! Love
Amazon!! I love that we can get away from all the stereo equipment & have
great sound as well. (And now that's he's finished downloading all the
music, I have my husband back) FYI, if you have an Apple store nearby,
they give lots of seminars on how to use the iPods. DH bought his at
Costco, which was the best deal he found.

Well, last time we wanted a radio we looked around at second hand
shops and sales and such until we found one that did shortwave as well
as AM/FM. I think it's a 70's vintage Ross multiband.

I reckon you want something a bit smoother sounding than one of those
old half ton beggers, but if you like music I do suggest getting a
multiband. Most of them these days tend to plug into a wall or run on
batteries as you choose.

We can listen to just about any kind of music we fancy, anytime of the
day or night, with that old radio. We can also listen to fairy tales
from Tiawan or cooking shows from Greece or what all else on the
english broadcasts from stations in far away. Austrailian DJs tend to
be a bit on the wierd side BTW.
We wouldn't miss "A Christmas Carol" on the BBC every Christmas eve
either.
The news as reported by other countries can be a bit of a revelation
as well.

My sewing room has a Sony with a cassette player, CD player, radio and
pretty good speakers. Not Bose, but pretty good.

I use my TV, which we get Satellite TV, We have music the tube, so I turn it
on one of the channels.. to what ever mood hits me at that time, could be
Country, Rock, Pop or 60 & 70s
DirecTV is changing over to Satellite Radio in the next few weeks
If we try a radio it would be in the car, home radios here just don't work.
