Howdy!
RZ, I tested your Black Hole Scrap Basket theory, again,
this week; too true! There are now more scraps (after 2 quilt tops)
than ever before. (I'm afraid to go rootling in the stash anymore
this week; too easy to get lost! g)
Our Carolyn-in-Harlingen(now Austin) had a scrap collection
she labeled: Scraps too small to keep. ;-D

Ragmop/Sandy -- often challenged to make a quilt from what's here
without shopping for more...except maybe batting...maybe --
so far I've won that challenge every time LOL

One quilter's scraps are another quilter's stash. Anything big enough to
fold goes back in the stash, and some of my stash pieces are smaller than
FQs. Anything smaller than foldable goes in the Black Hole Scrap Basket,
which never seems to become empty no matter how many quilts I make from
it. (The basket is about 12" across at the top and about 9" tall.) Every
project must use at least one piece from the basket, that's my personal
rule :-) Occasionally, I make a string or crazy pieced quilt just to keep
the scrap population under control. I try to make small blocks out of the
basket in between other projects. Useful for hugs.

Loved the posted sites about scraps and how to use them, but now how
do you define scraps ?
B.e. if I cut fabric of from a FQ or maybe half a yard. Mostly I have
left one big piece of fabric and the remnants of a stripe or remnants
of several stripes. Until now I stored them together. What do you do ?
If you are finished with the block or top you used the fabric for, do
you put all remnants in a scrap box or do you also store the remnants
with the big pieces of fabric ???

A scrap is something smaller than 1.5 inches square.

If it is bigger than that, I keep it with its fabric friends and keep
cutting as needed.

Two newer experiments: using FQs in the method Sally Schneider
recommends and making nickel quilts. So far I am in the acquisition
phase for each of these experiments. Perhaps I will have a report
next time this question is raised.

I'd hate to deal with anything smaller. I simply did a double seam and cut
between the lines of stitching when I realized how many little pieces I
would be throwing away.
Come to think of it, I also did a hst border on a lap quilt with some of the
hst. I sure had a lot of those little snips!

I always slip leftover strips or squares inside a large piece when I'm
putting away fabrics. I didn't realize how helpful this was until I saw my
beginner quilter expectantly shaking a a big hunk of fabric. I asked what
in the world she was doing and she said, "I was just hoping you'd tucked the
little piece I need inside here." Polly

For me, anything 6x9 or smaller after cutting goes in the scrap basket. But,
that's a more current thing - years ago (how many years has it been, Brenda?
6? ), I was given a really great set of 6" squares, rolled up to look like
chocolate candies. Each "candy" had a fruit filling (orange or raspberry or
lime pastels), a white creamy layer, and a chocolate brown coating. These
morsels went into the general fabric stash, and I'm still finding them and
using bits!

I do that too! Goodness, it isn't a scrap if there's lots of it! It's just a
pre-cut fabric :-)

Anything that is less than a whole yard and that I have cut into is a scrap
to me.

Thanks for all your posts.
I'll probably make it this way:
All remnants with a piece at least size of a FQ will be stored with
the big piece of fabric, all other leftovers or scraps I'll cut into
3" squares, 2,5 " squares and 4 cm stripes. I chose 3 cm stripes
because I started this years ago, when our Ms.Sairey once posted that
she cuts from every new fabric a stripe and stores it. If I remember
well, she also had a picture of log cabin quilt on her website, which
was made from such stripes. So I saved 4 cm stripes over the years and
have already a small box of it. I discovered (g) its the same size
I use for bindings, so all my leftovers from bindings go in this box.
Thanks again,
Heidi from Germany
